talking about Jerry Band official releases....this is one of my favorites. slow, silky, drippy goodness. Like a massage for the soul.

In terms of Rhino, the Kean College 1980 release is utterly ridiculous.

D'accord. It seems preposterous that something can be that sublime, yet it is so. And I take great comfort in the Legend of Mary, also.

Its funny, I first bought this when it came out quite some time ago and didnt like it at all because of how slow it is. Several months ago I found it in a pile of CD's and after giving it a second try I appreciate how good it is. I guess it just needed a little time to grow on me.

I had the same exact experience with it. I fell in love with it about a year after I bought it....its not right for every situation, but there are some moments in that show that just paralyze me- Jerry's guitar work in sugaree and mission, and that knockin is my favorite of all the knockins (I'm not into the faster versions that came out later....). Donna also sounds outstanding on the whole show- its funny you can tell the mighty high is from a different show because she sounds screachy unlike in the rest of the songs.

Looks like I am on a pretty good Desolation Row bender right now.

Most consider the Alpine 1989 version one of the finest out there:

I have been listening to Deer Creek 1990 and found this one to be a pretty strong candidate itself:

One of my favorites - Spectrum 3/31/87. While it is pocked with some lyrical lapses by Mr. Bob Wier, it is more than made up for in the crazy energy he displays. This one is well worth a listen:

I need MORE!!!!! Who else can recommend some all-time GD versions of one of the greatest songs ever written?!?

Funny you say that...I've been hitting it hard lately myself, two and three times a day. I especially dig the DR>Watchtower on "Postcards of the Hanging." That Watchtower is just exactly perfect. The DR is from Albany, 3/24/90. Together they are two of Bobby's best.

And yep, the Deer Creek '90 version is truly awesome. I need to track some more down too.

And though her eyes are fixed upon
Noah's great rainbow
She spends her time peeking

after my own heart, i was going to propose a thread... "best desolation ever" but other than Mr. Vegas and now tea for Texas, i didn't think it would be too popular.

The song is just chalked full of poetry, a great story of new york...

I love Dylan's "City songs." And the imagery in DR is not only evocative but, to me, resonates on several levels. I won't go into a Zimmerman exegesis, as others have written volumes, but will simply say that I believe the song is a work of genius. Something that yields more with every listening. Bette Davis style.

Deer Creek's version is very special to me. You should have seen Bob get on one knee and point to Brent before that solo of his.

Here are three with much of the same intensity...but they're all different.

Shoreline '87

Kaiser '86

Kaiser '88

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1988-02-17.sbd.miller.88399.sbeok.flac16

I just kindly ask that you not to listen to these all at once...each one of them is important.

I also am assuming you will be listening to these very loud, whether you are using headphones or speakers, because to not do that in this case would be....it just wouldn't be good.

Awesome... listening to Shoreline version first. This recording is absolutely incredible... Is Charlie Miller a famous taper?
