"Cold iron shackles, ball and chain

Listen to the whistle from the acid train"

Opening line of Tennessee Jed, 1st night Paris, as delivered cleanly and clearly by Garcia. The boys (and girls) were doing some partyin' through Europe alright!

Apparently this is the version from the Europe '72 LP? I guess I never listened that closely.

Did Jerry sing this in other versions?

I think they edited the Acid Train part out of the release. It was 1972, after all..but I have to admit I haven't listened to it in a long, long time.

Don't know of any others but that would have been a good title for Festival Express...or Might As Well.

"Acid" what a wierd name for such a wonderfilled agent. Almost sounds like something that should be avoided rather than explored. When and why did it it coined "acid"?

That has been the main term used since I've had any awareness of such countercultural matters, back in the late '60s. Given the tenor of the times, and without doing any research into the matter, I'd say it is simply a convenient shorthand term based on the molecule's scientific nomenclature. Plus, it was fun to say "drop acid."

I prefered the term "eat acid" meaning as much as I could get in my mouth. Wonder why I was always the one in the corner talking to himself. I know a few on the board who have adopted the :eating thing" to other forms, advil, viagra....

Lysergic acid diethylamide, abbreviated LSD or LSD-25, also known as lysergide and colloquially as acid, is a semisynthetic psychedelic drug of the ergoline family, well known for its psychological effects which can include altered thinking processes, closed and open eye visuals, synaesthesia, an altered sense of time and spiritual experiences, as well as for its key role in 1960s counterculture. It is used mainly as an entheogen, recreational drug, and as an agent in psychedelic therapy. LSD is non-addictive, is not known to cause brain damage, and has extremely low toxicity relative to dose, although in rare cases adverse psychiatric reactions such as anxiety or delusions are possible.[3]

"closed and open eye visuals"................. ie: you'll be seein' shit whether you want to or not.......
