RIP indeed.  Especially after a string of one illness after the next.

Lazy lightning
That sleepy fire in your eyes
Is that desire in disguise
I keep on trying but I
I can't get through

Lazy lightning
I'd like to find the proper potion
To try to capture your emotion
You're right beside me but I
I can't get through

You're a loop of lazy lightning
Just a loop of lazy lighting
Must admit you're kind of frightening
But you really get me high

So exciting
When I hear your velvet thunder
You seem so near I start to wonder
Would you come closer if I
If I asked you to

So exciting
The way you're messing with my reason
It's an obsession but it's pleasing
Tell me a lie and I will swear
I will swear it's true

You're a loop of lazy lightning
Liquid loop of lazy lightning
Must admit you're kind of frightening
You're a loop of lazy lightning

Rope of fire round my heart (lightning)
Rope of fire ever tightening
Rope of fire round my heart (tightening)

Come on come on lazy lightning

You're a loop of lazy lightning

Lazy lightning
You say you never start the same place
I want a double dose in any case
I'd fly a kite if I thought
Thought that would do

Here's to lightning
Well you always electrify me
Someday I know you'll satisfy me
And all that lightning will be
My lightning too

If you love the song Cassidy, you will want to read,  in  Barlow's own words, the story behind it

http://www.litkicks.com/BarlowOnNeal

He was one of the great ones. And I'm sorry we've lost him. But I have the sinking suspicion, he knew when the going was good.

This is a list of Barlow lyrics from Whitegum.com

I was one of the "lucky ones" who saw "Gentleman Start Your Engines" live, and I always blamed Mydland.  I'm going to forgive JPB for that one.

Well it's been heaven
Even rainbow's will end
Now my sails are filling
The wind so willing
And I'm good as gone again
I'm still walkin'
So I'm sure that I can dance
Just a saint of circumstance
Just a tiger in a trance
And the rain fallin' down
Rain falling down
Rain falling down

Very sad. Such a great wordsmith. Forced to pick one favorite as far as lyrics go.....let it grow is the one. Beautiful imagery in that song.

I have to admit that I am surprised to count only 15 songs that I would consider significant pieces in the Grateful Dead repertoire. If I was asked that question and had to answer without thinking, I would have said more. I have always thought of barlow as an equal to hunter, and I think he is in terms of ability to pen a song. Just never considered that the volume of significant contributions is not that substantial. When in say “significant”, I am not considering mydland tunes, Picasso moon, or brother Esau as significant pieces in the songbook.....but that’s subjective of course.

Makes you realize just how many covers weir relied on to carry his weight. And I truly mean.....not that there is anything wrong with that. Obviously, he also had some major collaborations with hunter that are part of his songbook.

We were lucky enough to meet and spend a little time with him at Hornings Hideout, likely there as he had worked with Michael Kang from String Cheese. Kind and very engaging, nice guy.

His involvemnet with the internet was a passion, as well as his battle with the TSA from the Bay Area. He had a great legal mind. We emailed back and forth occasionally for quite some time.

Have to respect him for a lot of things, good person.

John Perry Barlow's Principles of Adult Behavior

- Be patient. No matter what.
- Don’t badmouth: Assign responsibility, not blame. Say nothing of another you wouldn’t say to him.
- Never assume the motives of others are, to them, less noble than yours are to you.
- Expand your sense of the possible.
- Don’t trouble yourself with matters you truly cannot change.
- Expect no more of anyone than you can deliver yourself.
- Tolerate ambiguity.
- Laugh at yourself frequently.
- Concern yourself with what is right rather than who is right.
- Never forget that, no matter how certain, you might be wrong.
- Give up blood sports.
- Remember that your life belongs to others as well. Don’t risk it frivolously.
- Never lie to anyone for any reason. (Lies of omission are sometimes exempt.)
- Learn the needs of those around you and respect them.
- Avoid the pursuit of happiness. Seek to define your mission and pursue that.
- Reduce your use of the first personal pronoun.
- Praise at least as often as you disparage.
- Admit your errors freely and soon.
- Become less suspicious of joy.
- Understand humility.
- Remember that love forgives everything.
- Foster dignity.
- Live memorably.
- Love yourself.
- Endure

I've got this list hanging on my fridge. It pretty much says at all. Follow it, and you'll be doing alright.

Fare thee well, Mr Barlow. Thank you, thank you, and thank you again.

Those are all great except the don’t pursue happiness.  My mission in life is happiness so I guess I’m free to pursue it. We live a very short time and my only concern is being happy while I can. Personally I think the pursuit of happiness for you and people close to you is the only way to live life. Once we dead we dead so live it up.
