once again i will try to muster up the words to explain another amazing dso road trip/vacation/whateverthehellyouwanttocallit....

The day we (captain420 and I) were supposed to leave for nelson, i called anddave to check in (as we were camping together) and he said "why dont you come up to chicago and see tomorrows show and follow us to nelson in the morning." i said yes. and with that, we went to chicago instead. this was the perfect way to start the trip. had a nice relaxing day outside chicago, then headed off with dave to arm's pre-party. we turned on the street not knowing which house to look for and i immediately saw a familiar looking grey head (not gary the other 'greyhead'). not even knowing if chuck was in-town (but assuming he was, i mean it was the weekend!) i said 'is that chuck vegas?' sure enough we had found the place, with chuck and blythe greeting us at the door. what followed was a damn good time. food, brews, laughs, stories, and an acoustic performance from anddave on the back porch. "SUGAR MAGNOLIAS!!!" arm- thank you for a real good time!!! you were a great host, and you really put on a fine shindig. thanks so much for the brews and burgers. great meeting you andy! after several failed attempts at motivating, blythe, chuck, and myself piled into a cab with about 10 minutes till showtime. (thanks so much for the cab charles!!) a ten minute cab later, and 20 minutes in willcall and door lines i was in the show. despite a supposed strict 8 o clock start time, i had only missed part of the opener (although i will admit i have no clue what time it specifically was, but it had to be past 8). god it was good to be home again. security was a little rough, but ive seen worse. crowd was generally young... sorostitutes were in full force! crowd was okay, pretty into it, but during a really hot hot rooster, i looked around and barely anyone was dancing (as compared to eyes and sugar mag). run for the roses was the real treat this night, including a SIIIIICK guitar solo> b3 solo> guitar solo. it was great dancing with you blythe!~ a warm up for the week ahead of us.

went off to nlqp the next day. then the real fun began. too many memories/good times/laughs/etc to quote.. what a week! some of the more memorable experiences were: dancing with twenty or so dso-forum starheads at one time all week, Christmas morning grabbags, being followed by that techno wagon for miles, being fed constantly by numerous kind souls (who were all amazing cooks as well), the BIG sandwich (which was soooo good Kira!!), adventures to a mystical hippie stripper pole, and tons of fun sitting round campfires.

~a few thank yous~

THANK YOU DSO- for the amazing shows, the soundcheck show, and the ribs!

anthony- thanks so much for the awesome food and for feeding me over there! it was great meeting you.

**starheads check out this badass shit. anthony swam from his quarry side campsite across the quarry to the dso show on the beach. how cool is that,. now thats a way to travel to a show.

prescott- thanks for the cds and the beer man

kira/jamser- thanks for the big sandwich feast. that was really fun. it was so great meeting and hanging out with you two. im sad i wont see two very often... but theres always the ledges.

jersey steve- thanks so much for the food, company to cedar point, everything. you are truly an amazing person and i cant wait to hang out with you again!

tapinfool- thanks for the beer. that stuff rocked!

kirt "kampson"- thanks for the pizza and the laughs

anddave- thanks for the hospitality in your home and at you are here, the chili, and the fun times.

gratefulfest was a sensory overload. too many things to remember/say.... i'll just leave it at it was one of the best weeks of my life and i truly enjoyed seeing every one of you out there. i cant wait to do it again.

jfolks -

I'm slow on the uptake or the follow up, or whatever. Too much work, too little escape. It was great meeting you before you headed off to the Ledges. And Cap't420! Great surprise. Anddave's one-man acoustic set was the perfect atmosphere-setter. Man, the dude can sing! ChuckV and Blythe, happy acquaintances from Ithaca, awfully nice to see you gearing up for the show. You're always welcome. Godspeed on the great adventure. I still can't believe you've hit the road like this. OK, I can believe it. Just envious.

I woke up on Sunday...afternoon, feeling like I'd run a marathon. For a about a day I thought, "why do this?", then the fog cleared and I'm already thinking about next summer's Chicago show(s). We'll do it again, I promise. Hell, I do it every year. A warm-up party out in the yard for a January show at Park West wouldn't be the same. I'm willing to try, but summer seems to work best.

Ultimately, thanks are due to DSO for providing the excuse to party like this and for keeping the damn fun alive.

Thank YOU for the incredible hospitality and orchestration of a real good time! To say that you are a gentleman and a gracious host is an understatement. And I can understand about the fog setting in and then parting like clouds yielding to the sun's promise of a new day...hmmm, I had a thought there but it wandered off as they often do.

January in Chicago - hell, give it a shot. I'm in!! Again, thank you brother!

January days in Chicago are not-so-awfully-cold more often than one might guess. It's FEBRUARY ya gotta watch out for.

:)

Thanks arm and jfolks for the high praise. I'm really quite tickled that you invited me to play and looking forward to a re/three/four/five-peat.

Dave,

Thank you for the great renditions of 'Eternity' and 'Tons of Steel' and TLEO..highlights for me as you well know B)

It was also a real treat to get to sit back and relax with a kickass campfire every night and listen to you play your heart out on your guitar (the best I heard in the campgrounds I might add). As well as a pleasure to jam with you...it can be tough to play under certain conditions...you surprised me everytime!

Guest Mark from Piqua

Hi folks,

Janet and I had a great time camping next to y'all at NLQP. I've been to a lot of shows and fests, but that may truly have been the best ever. The campfire jams on Sunday and Monday were terrific. I wish we hadn't missed the poetry reading.

DSO has really taken things to a new level. I can't quite explain it, but it's like they are creating new Grateful Dead shows now, not just recreating them. The Friday night show with the elective set blew me away - best I'd seen from DSO.

Thanks for all the travel advice - I'm trying to put together 4 days in Amsterdam and 4 in Prague for our 20th anniversary next year.

I just wanted to relay one last quarry event:

On Sunday, we were hanging with jfolks and Mason, when security pulled up in a golf cart and asked if we'd seen a guy in a green shirt walk by. We said we weren't sure. Then they added that he's wrapped in caution tape and covered in puke. We said that we were sure we hadn't seen him. A few minutes later, they passed us with the guy walking in front of 3 golf carts as they escorted him out. He was quite proud of himself.

Thanks to Kevin for recording that awesome soundcheck! It was so cool of DSO to play an extra set for us.

Can't wait for Springfield.

Mark

great to hear from ya mark! 'welcome aboard'

so i posted that review the day i got home from the ledges... so i was still really feeling the vibes of the ledges.... and i forgot to post anything related to the music.

DSO was on fire. maybe the best show i've ever seen was the last night at nlqp. my faves for the week were stranger, shakedown, music, and jack straw (loved eaton's yell on this one), and world to give. there were so many others though... but those were the very best i thought. and the the energy (band and crowd alike) was just off the hook. indescribable... and the worries about a rough crowd were unfounded... it was the kindest crowd i have ever been a part of, minus jam in the dam. so kindest in the US is pretty fuckin great.

jgb, tricksters, greyspoke, cornmeal, and umphrees were all great sets as well

best gratefulfest ever!!!! :dsorocks:

Real excited to see you took our advice and jumped on the boards....good people on here.

It sure was a real treat to have camped near you 2, your presence was excellent.....

Have a good time in Springfield!

The last DSO at the ledges was one of the top performances I have seen....No doubt the best versions of some select songs that I have witnessed....Shakedown, Jack Straw (RUNNNNN! Thank YOU Eaton), Music Never Stopped (The best EVER! Words cannot explain!) Dark Star (really heavy) Esau, Run for the Roses in chicago (thanks Barraco, you ripped it up! Kudos!) JK's solo after half-step was worth the price of admission alone....among many other great feats.. Sweet Cumberland Jam! Flawless Visions of Johanna...world2give amazing! watching the wheels!!!!!! DEW! Miracle!!!!!! H>S>F! Weather Report -> EYES! MY OH MY!

Some believed DSO was gonna whip out THE CHAIN while getting ready for PRIDE....ahem... :o

Plus, The SICKEST DRUMZ That I Have Ever Witnessed....4 at once was quite the overload I needed... ;)

"Never Had Such A GOOD TIME! In My Life Before!!!"

Great to see you jumping on here Mark! Keep your eyes open for me in Springfield, I will have my 4 year old son along for that one. You, janet and tom were a pleasure to hang out with. Welcome aboard
