DSO Taping/Copying Wiki

Can we start a pinned thread for copying guidelines? Formats, instructions (detailed), history etc.... The sooner we get it started the sooner we can ask questions and develop rules of engagement for all of us. My goal for starting this discussion is to allow non techies like myself to weed through the lingo and info we don't have access to as the more experienced audiofiles among us have.

At the end of our discussion in this thread, I would like to have a locked wiki in the Tapers section with step by step instructions that all of us can follow easily. If we have the technology to preserve the music indefinitely, I would like to know how to use it properly.

Sound like a good idea?

Sounds like a good idea. For starters I'll be burning two sets of Masters (1x) from my final mastering. A copy will be kept on the hard drive here at home as well. Until I get a handle on FLAC files it will have to be CD audio. Insuring the highest quality CD audio is paramount in my mind.

A lot of folks are still more comftorble with audio discs, anyway. Although FLAC and whatnot definitely has it's benefits, I still prefer to burn audio, for this reason. And, not so many folks will be scared off a vine, because they don't understand FLAC.

FWIW, forwarding data discs with FLAC files to the initial seeds will make propagation easier and more reliable. Extracting from audio discs will flummox more folks than FLAC files will. Also, as Capt points out, extraction is kinda like adding a generation.

Just a suggestion.

here is the etree wiki on flac files... http://wiki.etree.org/index.php?page=FLAC

more on flac here... http://flac.sourceforge.net/

and to DOWNLOAD FREE for any and all operating systems... http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

shortcut through the technical jargon is flac is lossless unlike mp3's which truncate or remove portions of the audio

to make it smaller. where flac compresses it...at times 15% more than .shn, another older lossless format

flac files are EASILY converted by dragging and dropping into the program and clicking one button...that's it

they are then .wav or audio that can be burned to a cd-r

flac files can also be burnt to a dvd-r w/ many shows...up to 4.5gig, then played on a player like winamp

i haven't burned a cd-r for a year or more i'll bet. my recorder also plays flac files so i have them on it

instead of mp3's as well.

after you decode the flac to audio once you'll all be pro's...trust me...it's good times B)

My goal is to end up with step by step instructions with screen shots , and a glossary of terms to understand the acronyms, archived in this forum. I've tried those links and have ended up only more confused because they are written for technically inclined people. We may use information from those links agreed, but I'd like to break down the process into English we all can understand. Thank you for your patience...:)

My goal is to end up with step by step instructions

1) Download FLAC from one of these:

Windows: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/flac/flac-1.2.1b.exe

Mac: http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Audio/MacFLAC.shtml

2) Install FLAC

3) Run FLAC

4) Insert Data CD that you received in the mail from Capt, TF, or other FLAC-happy friend, into your CD drive

5) Drag/Drop files from CD into a folder on your computer

6) Drag/Drop files from that folder into FLAC

7) Click Decode

8) Use resulting WAV files to burn audio discs.

9) Forward audio discs to non-FLAC-savvy friends.

Got it? Good.

If you prefer not to learn this bit then make friends with a FLAC-savvy person and get your audio CDs from them.

Whelp Jimmy, per our conversation this morning, it doesn't seem to get any easier that ANDDAVE's step by step.... Let's give it a shot and see what happens... Maybe if you add a couple of screenshots in here and there it might make it more "non-techie" friendly?

Thanks Anddave!! Got any thoughts on the FTP suggestion from Jim?

Thanks Anddave!! Got any thoughts on the FTP suggestion from Jim?

You're very welcome. If you follow my directions into a ditch just post back here for help.

On the FTP thing, FTP is very doable. It would be greener, reducing the number of plastic discs burned. I, however, do not have a hosting deal that would withstand the bandwidth. I only post lossy stuff online, and all of it is from my local pub. (Check it out at http://anddave.com > Listening Lab)

Someone who has the bandwidth might host an FTP. Apart from that, I'd say what "Squirrel" said, patience! Waiting for the post is kinda fun, as our recent kindness from GFred has shown.

Starting to get it. Thank you for your post.

I'd like to share a story I learned from one of my teachers early on. We were talking about personnel and how people represent you to the public etc. and we talked about a training model for a particular company ( the company being unimportant to the lesson). The trainees were told that during the course of a work day, they may be asked the same question 25 times but to remember that it is the FIRST time that person is asking it.

It's a question of perspective and experience. I don't use this equipment at all except to burn a disk here and there but I am fascinated and eager to learn how it's done but also WHY you chose a specific file format or program. For instance, if I plopped a stack of deeds in front of you, gave you some notes and asked you to run the chain of title out, I wouldn't expect you to get it right the first time although you may. It's the same thing with what all of you do with music. I expect this to be a process that will unfold over the course of this project. I will start using the info in this thread...that will then generate more questions, etc.. So, please bear with me if my inquiry is tedious at times. So yes AndDave, I am excited about getting it and appreciate your information. Thanks again.

Last night, I actually mentioned to Rob E how "mystical" it was that he started this Vine concept the day I received the Amsterdam show from GFred (Thanks again!!)... As well as RowJimmy and his FTP concept, which I agree would be more "Green" as well as possibly easier for folks to basically just grab and d-load what they want with ease... Jim is looking furthur into the FTP avenue and I thank you for your breakdown of the alternate methods...

BTW, checked out your links and I have to say that it was ironic that you show both sides of you (Tie Dye vs. Suit)... Look familiar Rowjimmy??? LOLOL I too prefer the tie doe over the suit.....

Now all we need to do is put our heads together and decide on which road is best suited for our needs here and run with it..... DSO Archives is a real treat to look forward to!!!

Peace!!

Alex

i think rob is trying to get back to the "personal" end of trading and is trying to stay away from electronic file trading.

i could be wrong. but, this is what i've gathered from what i've read...just sayin'

Seperate issue...the technology isn't meant to replace the personal aspect of file trading just maintain the quality over time.

Nothing impersonal about using FLAC. It's just digital bubble-wrap to protect the valuable music inside.

hell, even disco pizza was closed for thr recipe in septmber :(

Sadly true, that...

And as for all this, I am really looking forward to learning the lossless ways of the 21st century while getting back to some retro roots...thank you all for this. Screen shots would be cool, but I won't whine about that until I screw up following anddave's 9-step Program...

I will try to do a how to. Complete with Offficer Obie's "twenty seven eight-by-ten

colour glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back

of each one" (from Alice's Restaurant).

Thanks Ron :)
