  2. I was with 1 1st timer from home. He didn’t know half the songs even though he’s listened to a decent amount of dead. 1st set had 4 rare songs plus piece of your heart. Hell I learned masters of war, keep on growing and lindy hop from seeing dso a lot. I also had never heard the rare Keith song sing your blues away until saw dso do it more times than the dead did it. I also had to google Fat angel as I listed the song initially as Fly Jefferson Airplane. 1st time I’ve heard a space actually sung that didn’t have the whole band coming back on stage. I always like being stumped. Doesn’t happen much anymore thanks to dso going crazy deep in the setlists but it happens.

  3. Damn. That's high level elective creativity! Love the respect for Quinn that it could go "standard" encore slot after all those gyrations.

  4. In case you haven't heard... 10/8/81....replay of show 1 Played really well. RB super organ solo during CC Rider. Show stopped during Playin for man down near rail. Tie dyed stranger did serious chest compressions for 10 minutes until medics arrived....saved his life according to band b4 Kevin Rosen took bass for encore. Alls well that ends well. .

  5. Set One: Feel Like A Stranger ; They Love Each Other > C. C. Rider ; Cumberland Blues ; Mama Tried > Mexicali Blues ; Althea ; Cassidy ; Loser ; Music Never Stopped Set Two: Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain ; Playing In The Band > Terrapin Station > Drumz > Space > Not Fade Away > Black Peter > Around And Around > Johnny B. Goode Encore: U. S. Blues F. Love the one you’re with Musically the show was great. Good crowd energy too. Unfortunately I haven’t been that miserable in a venue maybe ever. Took forever to get in, No re-entry, no space anywhere, no smoking deck, set break was a panicked mess, had me feeling super claustrophobic, everyone was trying to get somewhere not knowing there was nowhere to for anyone go. Medical emergency cut “Playin” short to wait for ambulance evacuation (updated the gentleman was ok) Looking forward to getting outa town and back to familiar territory

  6. Evidently Mattson decided to sing the Jefferson airplane song out of the blue during space. Whole song.

  7. Holy shit. That makes the fire Marshall fucking with folks clogging the aisles at Dead shows seem like child's play. (And to be clear, all my banter here is not meant to undermine the obvious seriousness of this scenario.)

  9. Either 85 or 86 Alpine Valley guy went down upfront requiring medics...coincidentally during Playin but Bobby pressed on..." I can't stop for nothing..."

  10. Wow great story about the tie dyed hero up front. Which brings up the question: did a Dead show ever pause during the music due to a medical or other situation in the crowd? Closest I can think of is when they didn't play an encore (Providence '86 perhaps?) because Billy got hit with a bottle post space, and the famous line from Phil at the '85 Saratoga show when some moron was hanging over a railing - "hey, man, there's 50,000 people waiting for you to get back into your seat." But none of that ever stopped the music in its tracks. Presumably if a naked guy climbed the speaker scaffolding during a DSO show there'd be a pause as well. 😆

  11. Coming in hot from Cincy, crazy ice storm on 74 west, lots of off the road wrecks, but I made it through and should be gold now , haven't been to St Louis since touring the Budweiser factory in high school

  12. I was just thinking about the struggle when they left chicago and hit the road for several years playing before very small crowds. They crashed on peoples couches in towns and struggled to put gas in the tank. They had a dream to play Grateful Dead and it took years to build it up where they could make a bit of money. I’ve been to several 50-100 people shows and know people like Chuck have been to shows with 10 people or less way back in the day. I’m sure there were times they thought about hanging it up but kept on and now take care of their families touring. It’s nice they have runs like Jamaica where they can make their nut. I like it for the band when they sell out 2000 people. I also enjoy it for myself when there are 300 peeps but that won’t pay their bills. Cheers DSO. Here’s to another 25. In 16 years maybe my little guy takes off with some buddies for a summer tour. Prob he will chase skirts at EDM fests which seem to be very visually appealing. Well I don’t think you could call it chasing skirts b/c girls don’t wear that much clothing. Maybe chasing thongs would be more accurate at EDM shows.
