1970-01-03, early and late shows Set 1: Morning Dew ; Me And My Uncle ; Hard To Handle ; Cumberland Blues ; Cold Rain And Snow ; Alligator > drums > And We Bid You Goodnite jam > Alligator > Feedback > Uncle John's Band Set 2: Casey Jones ; Mama Tried ; Big Boss Man ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Mason's Children ; Cryptical Envelopment > drums > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment > Cosmic Charlie ; Black Peter ; Dire Wolf ; Good Lovin' ; Dancing In The Street Encore: Saint Stephen > In The Midnight Hour I've been craving my first old school show. It only took 8 years and about 35 shows. This one was a blast and worth the wait! Skip's bass was cranked up in the mix all night, it almost felt like the bass was the lead. A rare treat to get a Mason's - they brought out stands, presumably with the lyrics, for Skip and Eaton. Alligator and the Cryptical thru Cosmic Charlie run were highlights for me, and of course that encore. Nice switch from the Showbox, which I've never been a big fan of. It was hot as hell though, and no sign of air conditioning. Two doors at the side of the room were open to the ocean breeze, and folks would occasionally go stand by the doors to cool off. There were loads of people sitting up in the balcony, not sure how they could take the heat up there. The floor had plenty of elbow room and tons of smiling faces that looked like they couldn't believe their luck getting this show. The crowd was definitely feeling it, and doing their best to ignore the heat. I must have drank a gallon of water but I still felt like shit yesterday and didn't drive down to Eugene. On one hand, I'm dreading learning what I missed there, but on the other I'm happy to have this show fresh in my mind for a while.

I'd like to give a shout out to Cotter for mastering a room made of rock. I had a chance to talk to him a little last night and he explained how challenging it was. I certainly don't have his ears, but to mine the sound was spot on. I could hear each instrument independently, crisp and clean. Thanks band and crew for two (mostly) memorable nights!

Yeah, I liked the venue, and was also thinking it would be a great spot for a multi-night run. Pretty big floor space, and not too packed for this one. It slopes up at the back with seats. I read that they designed it with computer models so no seat had a bad view. Despite lots of space devoted to seats, the rows seemed to have decent space between them and pretty much everyone was on their feet anyway.

4/23/77 Filler was Piece Of My Heart and Ripple. Killer setlist for DSO'S debut at The Mission Ballroom.
-
Same with Washington and Oregon I'll be in Denver for the last night, so that's something.

It's a good time to be thankful for tapers: https://archive.org/details/dso2021-11-27 https://archive.org/details/dso2021-11-26.akgc414xlii.flac24

I didn't think I'd be able to live with myself if I missed this chance to catch a show with Barraco on bass, a mere 2 states away. What a blast! Small venue - 200 people maybe? The band seemed to be having a lot of fun, and that always makes for a good show. Nate from Cubensis had a big smile on his face all night. Barraco is just amazing - nice bass solo in Eyes, and Hard to Handle killed. Definitely wish there were 2 or 3 shows to fill out the weekend but so glad I made it, this place was hot. Half step Bucket Ramble Memphis blues Loser Cassidy Little light (Tom Ryan on vocals) Estimated > eyes > music China > Rider Hard to Handle (Rob Barraco on vocals) Truckin>TOO>Dew>NFA>GDTRFB>NFA Sugar mags Brokedown

Hey! One of the rare times a taper was there. Those of us that weren't there get to hear Piece Of My Heart after all. https://archive.org/details/dso2021-09-04 And night 1 too https://archive.org/details/dso2021-09-03

I just found this one on archive.org. Hooray for tapers! https://archive.org/details/dso2020-09-25.dso2020-09-25

All of this rescheduling keeps adding to the mystery of where and when show #3000 will be.

Looks like this one had a taper! https://archive.org/details/dso2020-02-15

You know that entering just a date in Google will give you a link to that show on archive as the first result. No need for "grateful dead" in your search.

@Island Bro was looking for Here Comes Sunshine - first song after you headed home to more rain
-
Not that I noticed, but with any luck, I'm just unobservant.

Monkey and the Engineer wasn't on the planned setlist. Some guy kept calling out for it, and at one point Eaton responded that they're playing that in San Francisco so they can't play it now. Then the guy's girlfriend claimed he left because they weren't going to play it, and Baracco said "he's gone? We should play it now"
-
Fixed seating and most everyone sat for the first set, other than a few dancing in the aisles. A girl in the front row got told to sit down when she tried to dance. At the beginning of the second set she made a pitch to get everyone to stand, and the room complied.

This was an amazing show. It blows my mind that they can pull such rare songs out of the catalog and play them as competently as they do everything else. Lisa on Chimes of Freedom is powerful stuff.
-
Usually in 3 nights I can pick either a favorite or least favorite, but not this time. Despite my feelings about the venues in Seattle and Portland, all 3 of these shows were grate for me. Looking forward to winding down with an acoustic show before heading home.
