Last time I saw her was on stage with DSO in 2018 in Birmingham,.. and she sang I’ll be with thee with Lisa. That memory is in the vault! RIP Donna. 🙏

One of my all time fav DSO performances. Lisa and Donna taking turns until Catfish John filler which featured both.

 

During intermission early rendition of Boombox entertained. Had a fantastic convo with Donna regarding my Deadhead friends of late 70’s and their attitude ( not good) toward her singing. She was quite amicable and laughably explained “so loud, couldn’t hear a thing”.

Donna was much maligned, and rightfully so, for painfully off key wailing at the worst possible moments in the Dead's epic early 70s jams. In fairness, much of that was to do with technical issues on stage with her inability to hear herself.  Rumors even exist that some misogyny within the crew contributed to this. But that's here-say so perhaps best unmentioned.

 

That said, her work within a seminal time of Jerry's solo career, his embarkment of JGB, is top flight. And moreover, duets in '77 with Bobby during the likes of Cassidy and Looks Like Rain are often fantastic. Not to mention the extra charge in the final chorus of some '72 Sing Me Back Home renditions. Make my old memories come alive indeed. 

 

RIP, Donna-Jean.

Till the morning comes, show opener, DSO at the Ram’s head in Baltimore the night before New Year’s Eve, somewhere around 2008. Also, with DSO at Red Rocks. I watched that one live stream. I feel bad for Lisa.

one of my favs was jgb 78 warner theatre with maria muldaur.

the two of them smilin, harmonizing was schweeeet.
