When did they start the elective setlists?

They do an elective about every 3rd show and have been doing so for a long time I think.  An elder Starhead would have to confirm.  Definitely since 2011 when I came on board.  I don't think they were ever specifically dedicated to recreating the exact same date in history.  Again that would need confirmation.  Last year has had the most "anniversary" shows I've seen with the 40th anniversary of 1977.

Do they usually keep the same stage setup for night #2 at the same venue? Will tonight be a '76-'78 show?

never that I can recall.  You'll definitely get something different.

they didn't do 76-78 last night anyway.  It was an elective spanning all decades

  3. Look at all this fun I've been missing out on on the forum!  Not only fun, but important stuff too.  The most important thing in the world even!

Loved this New Years run!!!!!!  Someone had mentioned after the show it may have been the most consistent 4 night run they've ever seen.  I am in complete agreement with that.   Band energy, crowd energy, setlist assembly, playing, exploratory jamming, environmental factors, and my own interconnection to the music and audience was very consistent each night.

And what a DANCE PARTY!!!!!  Especially night 1 at Electric Factory.  Everyone went completely bananas when they busted into the Johnny B Goode following Terrapin!  SO MUCH FUN!!!  Loved the Alligator in the 3rd set.  Love the way DSO performs that tune!  The Death Don't >Caution at the Wellmont was also a major highlight for me of this run too.

This NY's run was one of the most energetic DSO dance parties of the year that I was a part of.   Also can't forget night 3 in Berkeley.

Electives suffer from the interpretation and creativity of an intermediary.

Couldn’t disagree more. Electives are more authentic in a way since DSO often takes setlists and song arrangements into territory the GD did not.  GD was about constantly pushing tunes furthur into uncharted territory.  These one drummer old school/73 style electives they’ve been doing have been incredible.

First Set Franklins (quick:  say that 10X) are indeed great - even without the Help-Slip paring!  11/2/79 (21 minutes!), 3/13/82, 3/31/87 are a few of my favorites

I knew you'd come through the the stats Tea!!!

3/19/77 Winterland = one of my favorite Franklin's.

  6. Great show.  Tons of fun.  Can't help but to smile when you hear a La Bamba.  Sorry Jer, Jeff's spanish is better than yours.  How many La Bamba's has DSO performed?  Anyone know.  Didn't the Dead only do it like 3 times?

Feel>Franklin's is a wonderful way to start a show.  I also thought that 10-8-89 was the first Franklin's in 6 years or whatever.  That must have been the first Help>Slip>Frank suite.  Or I just don't know what I'm talking about on that, which is very possible.  Anyway, I love Franklin's early in a show.  Gets the crowd and the band moving and having a good time!

One of the few places I've been where people didn't just drop their empty cups on the ground - They cared to keep the dance floor clean, was really nice.

I don't and have never gotten why people do this at any concert.  I'm as guilty as they come for setting a beverage in a corner or in a small nook, only to wander off and forget to grab it.  But I've never finished one on the dance floor and just dropped it at everyone's feet.  Seems absurd to me.  No respect.

Old school I consider more to be '68/'69 with the Hammond and 2 drummers.

This was '72/'73 middle[jr high] school.

I personally put anything with Pig in the old-school category, although I feel obliged to inform people of at least the exact year.

I'm not sure DSO has done any recreations before '69, if so very few.  anyone know?

  9. Solid second set featuring a very serious Eyes and Sampson as well as an epic NFA>Truckin to end the set.  I commented that I've seen a few too many NFA's in the past month and a half, but this one was very interesting and kinda unique. I'm going to have to check some Dead versions from late 77-78 and see if they were doing this unique segment that the band was doing last night.

I like this venue, aside from the asshole door guys.  Dance floor is huge with tons of room for people to get down.  Nice outdoor area where you can bring your beverages.

American Eagle needs to build a stage in Cleveland.  We have several great venues in Cleveland that would be much more appropriate for our crowd and I've always wondered why they play the House of Blues, which isn't bad but has an absolutely atrocious design which doesn't allow good sight lines to the stage or sound lines to the speakers.

Unfortunately the places I'm thinking of are just a little too big for DSO.

they said because they can play longer indoors I say start the show earlier Outdoors...

That's unfortunate, but in today's case an 8pm start actually helps us, although I think we'll still arrive an hour early..  Good news is the inside had plenty of space for dancing last year.

skipping Rochester next night. .. I did both stadium shows the last 2 years there ....the set up up stage sound and dancing space just didn't do enough for me to make it 3/3

No dancing space?  It's a small stadium is it not?  They should be able to fit the whole crowd right on the field.  I don't get it?
