Nice site! I am just wondering did you use Oracle code for your search parameters? I had no idea about doing something like this 20 years ago.

The programming is done in PHP, and the database is MySQL which is a free, open source database that is owned by Oracle. This combination is probably behind more than half of the sites on the internet, including these forums.

I think it's safe to say that this site wouldn't have been possible 20 years ago! A lot has changed with what can be done in a web browser. My first experience with Oracle in the late 90s was on a computer the size of a refrigerator.

Wondering why the 87 Compton Terrace show is left out of the venues section? That was a nice show after RR>Telluride and right before the Park West experiments.

I sent you a message in your contact part to help with filling the gaps〽️

So you might have found a bug with my contact page, because I didn't receive anything there. But I just made a change if you wanted to try that again, or you can PM me here on the forums. I'll certainly research, and if needed, correct, anything that folks point out that might be missing or incorrect. Some eras have been more heavily researched than others and it would be fair to say that not everything is 100% perfect.

You are actually the second person to ask me about Compton Terrace. Because the venues are organized by city, and this venue moved from Tempe to Chandler, there are actually two separate venues.

  3. So I have this little project that I've been working on for quite a while now - 6 years? I think it's ready to share with the world, or at least the Deadhead subset of the world.

This started out with the thought - why is there no modern, searchable online database of GD shows? Eventually, since this is the sort of thing that I do for a living, that thought grew into "I could do that, but do I really want to?" It was a huge undertaking, and over the years it got shelved several times. About a year ago I found myself telling @John A about it, and it is in large part because of doing so that the project eventually got to this point. Several folks here on the forums have seen this, but I owe a huge thanks to John in particular for his contributions to the data, and his infectious enthusiasm for all of these Grateful Dead stats and details.

The site isn't complete, and probably never will be, but it's time to get it out there, to see if anybody actually uses it. If it gets discovered and has enough people visiting, I'll keep paying for the hosting... but if not, it might not last. So I hope some of you will check it out, pass it around, and have some fun with it.

  4. 1970-01-03, early and late shows

Set 1: Morning Dew ; Me And My Uncle ; Hard To Handle ; Cumberland Blues ; Cold Rain And Snow ; Alligator > drums > And We Bid You Goodnite jam > Alligator > Feedback > Uncle John's Band

Set 2: Casey Jones ; Mama Tried ; Big Boss Man ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Mason's Children ; Cryptical Envelopment > drums > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment > Cosmic Charlie ; Black Peter ; Dire Wolf ; Good Lovin' ; Dancing In The Street

Encore: Saint Stephen > In The Midnight Hour

I've been craving my first old school show. It only took 8 years and about 35 shows. This one was a blast and worth the wait! Skip's bass was cranked up in the mix all night, it almost felt like the bass was the lead.  A rare treat to get a Mason's - they brought out stands, presumably with the lyrics, for Skip and Eaton. Alligator and the Cryptical thru Cosmic Charlie run were highlights for me, and of course that encore.

Nice switch from the Showbox, which I've never been a big fan of. It was hot as hell though, and no sign of air conditioning. Two doors at the side of the room were open to the ocean breeze, and folks would occasionally go stand by the doors to cool off. There were loads of people sitting up in the balcony, not sure how they could take the heat up there. The floor had plenty of elbow room and tons of smiling faces that looked like they couldn't believe their luck getting this show. The crowd was definitely feeling it, and doing their best to ignore the heat. I must have drank a gallon of water but I still felt like shit yesterday and didn't drive down to Eugene. On one hand, I'm dreading learning what I missed there, but on the other I'm happy to have this show fresh in my mind for a while.

  5. I'd like to give a shout out to Cotter for mastering a room made of rock. I had a chance to talk to him a little last night and he explained how challenging it was. I certainly don't have his ears, but to mine the sound was spot on. I could hear each instrument independently, crisp and clean. Thanks band and crew for two (mostly) memorable nights!

  6. Yeah, I liked the venue, and was also thinking it would be a great spot for a multi-night run. Pretty big floor space, and not too packed for this one. It slopes up at the back with seats. I read that they designed it with computer models so no seat had a bad view. Despite lots of space devoted to seats, the rows seemed to have decent space between them and pretty much everyone was on their feet anyway.

  7. Weir sort of said as much in a Rolling Stone interview several years ago:

Was there a point in a show or set, during a song, on the tour last fall when you realized Dead & Company had gone from being a good idea to something with a future?
Yeah, there was. I had a little flash while we were playing one night. It was toward the end of the tour. I don’t remember what city it was in. We were getting into the second set, setting up a tune. We were all playing, but the tune hadn’t begun yet. We were all feeling out the groove, just playing with it.
Suddenly I was 20 feet behind my own head, looking at this and kind of happy with the way the song was shaping up. I started looking around, and it was 20 years later. John’s hair had turned gray. Oteil’s had turned white. I looked back at the drummers, and it was a couple of new guys. I looked back at myself, the back of my head, and it was a new guy. It changed my entire perception of what it is we’re up to.

  8. I didn't think I'd be able to live with myself if I missed this chance to catch a show with Barraco on bass, a mere 2 states away. What a blast! Small venue - 200 people maybe? The band seemed to be having a lot of fun, and that always makes for a good show. Nate from Cubensis had a big smile on his face all night. Barraco is just amazing - nice bass solo in Eyes, and Hard to Handle killed. Definitely wish there were 2 or 3 shows to fill out the weekend but so glad I made it, this place was hot.
