  1. Finally some room to dance! Every venue I’ve hit this run a has been super crowded. This was the most casual show of the five I caught, but also the most definitely FAMILY crowd vibe.

Stir it Up, dedicated to Aston “familyman” Barrett was a real treat. Warm and heartfelt.

Last night's performance of Shakedown Street was a relevation, taking the song to a new place. Maybe, just maybe, the best rendition of Shakedown Street I've ever heard. Any way of getting a recording?

also you might find some footage on YouTube. TedToob channel is a good place for find Bay Area shows online.

Slim chance of an AUD recording appearing on archive. If you can wait a couple years Eaton might put it up on Nugs…

I could never get into Lebron James cause they crowned him king before he ever played a game. I don't like seeing Billy Strings play bigger venues than DSO. I think he's good but a little overhyped overrated. I know that opinion isn't gonna be shared much on this forum. For instance, I recently listened to Billy do senor and the comments on YouTube were gushing with this is the best version of senor ever. It's like Dylan wrote this song for Billy. I nearly puked in my mouth. Garcia version crushes Billy's. Billy is great don't get me wrong but let's not go crazy.

See I need the forums to help me pass the time.

DSO are absolutely my #1 band to see live, but I’m damn glad they still play smaller venues. And I can’t imagine being irked about Billy Strings’ success. The kid has a crack band with its own improvisational style, plays tremendously well, sings with great emotive force, and writes fantastic original songs. If he could dance, he’d be bigger than Taylor Swift! He has his own thing and the cover versions are just the icing on the cake

music is a collaboration, not a competition. DSO tour hard but they can’t hit every town every year. And we need young talent for “this music” to continue.

    • 2/23/74, show was a doozy! Started just after 7 and ran shortly past 11, pretty late for sleepy Menlo Park. Both sets packed with gems, band continued in top form.

    •  Set 1: Around And Around, Dire Wolf, Me And Bobby McGee, Sugaree, Mexicali Blues, Here Comes Sunshine, Beat It On Down The Line, Ship Of Fools, Jack Straw, Deal, Promised Land > Bertha > Greatest Story Ever Told
    • Set 2: Row Jimmy, Weather Report Suite Prelude > Weather Report Suite Part 1 > Let It Grow > Stella Blue, Big River, Ramble On Rose, Me And My Uncle, He's Gone > Truckin' > Drums > The Other One > Eyes Of The World, One More Saturday Night
Encore: Casey Jones, Johnny B. Goode > And We Bid You Good Night

Casey jones played as set closer, not in encore

Thanks for that interesting post AC…yes, firing on all cylinders indeed.

wasnt sure they played the middle Playin’ jam between Black Muddy and Miracle found in the original show, but maybe that just flew over my head,,,,when they did come all the way back into Playin’ to finish it off at the end of show it was this precision shift out of Around and Around…not slowly woven together out of a transition jam. They fully finished Around and then a split second later dropped right into the Playin’ jam….just full band completely turned on a dime so suddenly like a well oiled machine. Listened to the original show and it was kinda like that but different—this was better and crispier cleaner, I’d say…(honestly most of the show was played better than the original but maybe I wouldn’t say that if I was actually at the original 😅)

The jam out of Miracle rolled out an exquisite grroove with a slow slinky drift towards drums…

The Sound venue is so new and impressive, $17 million facility and indeed had very good sound throughout venue. Main floor got ridiculously crowded for second set and retreated to balcony and found solid space up in center with killer sound and view of band so I guess even in a sellout it’s safe to say that good dance space can be found…lots of fun dance pockets out on the edges of both levels…

Holds 1900. Definitely better than house of Blues in San Diego and nice to be just north out of the city in smaller town on the beach. The space certainly doesn’t have soul, being so new, but it has a lot going for it….but nothing like being in an old beauty like the Wiltern in LA which is just an incredible expression of artistic beauty…possibly most intricate and gorgeous old theater on all the west coast from what I’ve seen…..

they definitely did the Playin jam between BMR and Miracle. It was great - as was the post-Miracle jam into drums.

My first time at The Sound - it’s well named. Extremely hi-Fi acoustics. Still has a sterile feel as a brand new place. The pit area is enormous, with no clear aisles, so it’s a bit of a mess, though the crowd wasn’t uncomfortably dense, just huge and disorganized.

I’ll have to explore the balcony next time. Definitely a welcome addition to San Diego’s thin selection of venues. We needed one this size.

Completely GAME ON show…such a different experience than Del Mar which was super fun, played so well and arguably had better sound in the brand spanking new venue but….

complete roof blowout during Deal after a super solid first set and just total second set beauty perfection…whatever words you use for speechless situations…

LA crowd was full throttle and giving it loud and clear back to the band right out of the gate and all the way through and the symbiotic organism fed on itself thoroughly throughout the night…band was so ready to go out on limbs and lay it all down…never recall seeing Jeff quite so animated and playful and literally getting down while slaying the shit out of so many jams…

it was just one of those nights….

the Wiltern is such an old beauty (had seen them there 4yrs? Ago) and it makes me wonder how the influence of such a beautiful space that clearly has soul and so much history influences the music…

terraced floor so no slope dancing, like the warfield and other small halls I’ve seen that have Eliminated the slope floor for flat terraces….boulder theater comes to mind too…

didn’t talk to tons of people but was surprised how many peeps we came across who were DSO virgins in last couple nights. Definitely DandC splillover in there…

getting their minds blown I’d say!

wow thanks for this full throttle dialed in Saturday night in LA

    Smokin’ Hot🔥

    🌹

    Agreed on so many points.

The sound in the Wiltern was far from as crisp as it was at The Sound in Del Mar.

packed house in LA had definite D&C spillover and heady big city vibes compared to laid back San Diego.

both shows sold out, arguably oversold. We had to bail from the Wiltern pit due to extreme squeezing - it just wasn’t fun getting pressed up against that much flesh. Found some empty seats up top. Lovely view but people were shorter when they built those seat.

Jeff’s extremely animated this tour. Pushing things to the brink again and again.

we’re skipping SLO but looking forward to some winter heat in NorCal

Guessing (publicly) a show before it starts is a fools errand - but it's FUN!  So I'm gonna go with (2) choices:  The one that I hope you get that you have some chance of getting (heart) and the one that's slightly more possible (head).

    Heart - 1974/07/19

    Head - 1984/10/27

    Enjoy all the backyard shows!

Last night in Tempe was a mid-80s flavored elective selection, so I’d say the head has the edge between those two.

    but who knows?

  12. Pretty excited to start a five-show Cali run in (basically) my hometown.

The Sound is a brand new venue, looks promising.

lots more sold out shows than usual this tour, I guess because people aren’t blowing their cash on D&C tour? Whatever, it’s good for DSO and good for fans.

    LFG!!!

    Absolutely…

‘Twas a great way to dive back into the Warfield which I hadn’t been in since over thirty years ago seeing Jerry band shows there…such a beautiful old theater and Cotter had the sound dialed so well for that space with Skip well represented in the mix while he slayed dragons with Mission Control.

DSO at the Warfield is always special. One of my top events of the year.

The price is high. If I can convince Whitney that this is a suitable birthday gift we will make it. If not, I may have to pass but seriously if you like Grateful Dead music this is the best festival going. They need to fix some sound issues from last year. DSO had it dialed in but sound fell apart during jgb and oteil at that price you can't have that happen.

sound was mostly great last year, only major sets with any issues were Oteil being delayed and limited to 20 minutes, and the  preceding Circles Around the Sun who got some loud cracks. The JGB set went smoothly.

Prices are way high, but there were early options for less, and there are single and 3-day passes as well.

There’s room for Skull and Roses to improve, but the event also has a lot going for it. Atmosphere is amazing and you get to spend a week with the California fam
