Lovelight (pigpen style)encore: Golden Road to unlimited devotion
(elective set)First of a run of Cali shows with Stu Allen sitting in for Jeff, at the posh Mountain Winery in swanky Saratoga overlooking Silicon Valley.
as a capital J “Jeff guy” let me say that Stu integrated with the boys near-seamlessly. Great onstage communication, real gone jams, and some novel, well-executed transitions - particularly the segue from China Cat into Corrina.
Venue is breathtaking - the old Paul Masson winery built in 1852. Mighty old for the west coast. Surrounded by vineyards, astonishing views, and a very small, intimate amphitheater. Bathrooms and water refills were kind of a trek. Security up front were pretty aggressive about keeping aisles clear and checking tickets for empty seats. But we know how to have a good time so we worked around it.
I’m not going to Days Between this year but I expect nothing but excitement from this Stu-pid awesome configuration.

I’ll be there in person, so look for me on-camera. I’ll be the guy wearing tie-dye!

Peter Rowan was great. Everyone should go see him at Jubilee.
Bob’s 5th time with DSO and first since (as PoetryGirl mentioned) 2014.
Were they the best DSO shows I’ve ever seen? Maybe not. But it was a very special weekend at a very special place. I feel blessed to have been there.
I was also there and neither of the guest appearances detracted from the DSO performance.
When Weir came out Saturday night, they had already played three jammed-out songs. Weir’s guest slot didn’t cost us any headiness. It DID add to the family vibe, though. It was a great time and a darn good show.

I mean, it is Bobby, come on, but yea, watch the crowd bobbing and weaving at the beginning of Shakedown and towards the end everyone is kinda standing around. Even Lisa looked a little lost. I couldn’t agree more with the earlier post about Bobby singing Jerry tunes. It’s just not right. I think he butchers them. Haven’t heard much though, don’t want to have to unremember them. Bobby should just retire. The torch has been passed.
To be fair, the Shakedown jam was pretty shakey. It got better from that point on.

I think it’s awesome that Bob wanted to sit in with the band, and of course DSO, I am sure, was thrilled to have him. I think the bottom line is, if you made a career playing this music, and Bob Weir wants to sit in for a few songs, you let him, and he’s in charge for whatever he wants to do. I think it was gracious of Eaton to step aside to give Weir the space in the music he’s carved out for himself and is accustomed to occupying. It was probably cool to watch his hero sit in in his position in his band, and I’m sure it was a treat for the audience!
As Eaton said, they were lucky to be able to collaborate with their hero/mentors!

Nope.Bobby sang all of the songs he was present for.
And he apparently also requested that they play everything Dead and Slow style. Videos embedded in the story linked below.
https://www.jambase.com/article/bob-weir-dark-star-orchestra-san-francisco
they didn’t play everything at raging tempo. But it was faster than D&C. Bobby called the count for Cassidy quite slow, but the band brought the speed up gradually.
shakedown jam kinda went nowhere, but things got better from there. It seemed like Weir got more into it once he switched to the big orange Gretsch - China Cat saw him immediately reaching for the Bigsby. The jam into rider was stretched out and the band gave Weir plenty of space: it was DSO backing Bobby and giving him the spotlight.
morning Dee was tremendous, with Jeff being pretty spare with the leads, letting Bobby shine.
36 minutes ago, Mojo Hand said:Oh man.......I love Bobby as much as anything in this world. However, I actively have chosen to skip his performances for the past 10 years. From Day one of all post Jerry iterations, it has astounded me that Bobby sang Jerry tunes. Bobby butchers them by trying to adapt his lyrical style to Jerry tunes and it doesn't work. Combine that with the slow pacing of recent years.....no good.
I don't go to DSO shows to see novelty acts. I attend so I can experience a transcendent musical and physical experience. I would not have been a happy camper if I was at this concert. Most especially if I traveled any distance or made any special personal arrangements to attend.
I think it's a great gesture to bring Bobby on stage. But I think DSO made a HUGE mistake by having Eaton leave the stage and Bobby take over. Bobby should have been a special guest on stage playing alongside Eaton, and he should have played within the framework of what DSO does. Instead, they chose to compromise the quality of the music they presented to fans on that night. We pay to see DSO perform Grateful Dead music. What I saw on these videos is not on par with DSO at their best.
To be honest, I thought the same thing when DSO had Lisa leave the stage at Red Rocks for Donna Jean. I have no idea what Donna Jean sounds like now. I have never listened to her or seen her post Grateful Dead. However, I do know that she was inconsistent as a singer and her stage presence was a straight out downer. Look at her body language from 70's shows. There's no comparison to what Lisa brings to the table.
Why would the band choose to take off half a set in deference to someone else? I don't think they are entirely considering the fans perspective in that decision.
Keep in mind Weir sat in most of first set, after DSO set things up with a massive threefer; the second set was all DSO and was fantastic… plus we got a wonderful Mission in the Rain encore.
I sure didn’t feel ripped off!

The only Intel I have is they’re NOT coming to Arizona, which obviously sucks balls.
Will they ever return to AZ?!?
Great OP though, AC. Hope we get some action round here.
Someone should promote this site at the shows. We’d get new members that way.
They’re not even hitting SoCal… it’s a pretty concentrated tour

I wonder if they will let Jay Lane wear the “catman” makeup…

I didn't think I'd be able to live with myself if I missed this chance to catch a show with Barraco on bass, a mere 2 states away. What a blast! Small venue - 200 people maybe? The band seemed to be having a lot of fun, and that always makes for a good show. Nate from Cubensis had a big smile on his face all night. Barraco is just amazing - nice bass solo in Eyes, and Hard to Handle killed. Definitely wish there were 2 or 3 shows to fill out the weekend but so glad I made it, this place was hot.

Well, rest assured they didnt fly out west for just that tiny club show (200 people tops!). At the end of the night, Jeff said “see some of you in Pedro tomorrow”. San Pedro hosted the SoCal Hoedown that day, a sort of punk rock street fair.I had driven up from San Diego, and was tempted to stick around if I could find out where they where they’d be jamming. Looking over the Hoedown lineup, none of the bands seemed like a fit. Maybe Fishbone, but even that would have been a stretch.
most likely they played some private afterparty. I went home.
-
Woah that show was quite a treat!
apparently they are playing somewhere in San Pedro tonight. So-cal hoedown post-party?
jeff played the new Irwin Grapes of Wrath guitar first set, and a peanut replica the second set (Is that the new Rick Turner build?)

I'll agree with this, and add a few comments:
Eyes had the extended '74 coda (Stronger than Dirt?). Dark Star went places! Drums / Space sounded techno-y to start, stayed very electronic but got very weird. We were right behind the soundboard. The outdoor sound was loud, pristine, and had amazing stereo effects.
Hot day, very comfortable evening in the tree-lined bowl. Supposed half-capacity sold (~2,000?), made it quite spacious, but double that and it might be a different story. What a great time!
Agreed on all counts. There was ample dancing space up front. Very intimate, you’d run into the same people in the bowl that you had just broken bread with at camp.
Sound quality was awesome, though the equipment wasn’t necessarily “vintage accurate” as they’re not touring with the big rig. Skip on Fender Jazz bass both nights.
Cassidy sandwich really worked, Eyes 73 style into a raging GSET with St Stephen quotes was arguably the highlight. I’m not that big on Low Spark but this rendition was intense, with Jeff lifting up the Bean like the rockstar he is! Yet there he was with us in the pit for Dave Nelson’s set.
Excellent GD family vibes at the Hog Farm like only DSO can really bring in this day and age.

Jeff, Barraco, and the drummers with organ and bass from the longest running LA Gd tribute band - less than 20 bucks even with service charge - how can you go wrong?
oh right - it could get cancelled.
well, I got tickets, so fingers crossed!

I remember being bemused by how wild that 2nd set was when I first heard the tape in the mid 80s. An eternal question when reviewing such a performance is what gives? What motivated that set to transpire? Beyond the odd structure, the only '78 Jack-A-Roe, and the final of just 3 World To Gives.
I guess they were still sorta sorting out the drums/space thing in 78, and they stuck it at the front end of the set to see how well it worked
-
Bizarre setlist for sure, but I was there and the pacing definitely worked for me. It was a total facemelter hoedown!

note: this set was originally planned for the (cancelled) Tahoe show that would have happened tomorrow night.
I’m pretty thrilled the Warfield got this twofer of consecutive tribute sets. Both nights were absolutely off the charts, with the whole band bringing it, and strong!
also: Skip played Mission Control bass again - sounded outstanding, especially his late/post-Eyes solo. Damn!
