Forum MVP Ammagamalin Crew Posted January 11 Forum MVP Report Posted January 11 Just found out ~ Rest in peace Bobby and condolences to his family and others close to him. After being up close during the late 80's I got to appreciate his incredible guitar work doing leads that I had thought were always Jerry.Β Quote
Forum MVP Masons Child Posted January 11 Forum MVP Report Posted January 11 Literally saw this one minute ago when I loaded google as part of my google suggested articles. NBC reported. Came here as soon as I managed to dry my eyes. Bobby carried Jerryβs legacy like no one else. The band is getting back together in heaven. Bobby Jerry Phil and all the keys you could ever need.Β Β RIP Bobby Words can not explain your importance to my world.Β Quote
Vic81 Posted January 11 Report Posted January 11 Got in my car before and most of the time channel 23 on Sirius radio is on and in big words it said RIP BOB WEIR. Big Steve was talking about Bobby. Super sad and bummed out.Β I wanna share something here. Dark star on Saturday played masterpiece and I was really diggin the Dylan jams( 4th street ) as well. Now Iβm thinking about the Cassidy, it was so powerful. So Β On Sirius today around 2pm they played Jerry and John khan version of masterpiece. so it made me recapΒ the shows at the Capitol this past weekend were so amazing as always but for some reason these certain songs stuck out. Β My good friend with me had told me his sister favorite song is positively 4th street to add to it.Β Β Eventho they are Dylan songs, masterpiece is a Bobby number when it comes to the dead. As Iβm thinking this I was a little mad I didnβt make the GD 60 due to traveling with the rest of my family and said I would like to see Bobby again soon. Then I find out 6 hours later hes gone. Found this very WEIRd in a way as only we could understandβ¦ IΒ think it was the βLong strange tripβ documentary Bobby said he thinks been on stage more than any guitarist in history. I didnβt do the math but it sounds right. Starting with the dead and everything in between and after the dead. Itβs Β an insane amount of hours on stage. Β What a gem of a musician we've been blessed to have had in our lives. Heβs finally back with his best friend and everyone else.Β RIP to βthe kidβ Bob Weir thanks for everything. Been a rough few years. Phil Donna Bob. Not fade awayΒ Β itβs pouring outside my houseβ¦.for it surely looks like rain.Β Β Quote

Forum MVP John A Posted January 11 Forum MVP Report Posted January 11 It's worth noting that nothing about his illness went public, much less that heβd started treatments just before the big DEAD 60 Golden Gate Park celebration. Β Much as I moaned about him taking over Garcia / Hunter gems he couldnβt properly sing, no matter - it was 100% his right to do so as he chose. You could argue it was Phil in the early years, but in balance there was no musician closer and with a greater kindred spirit to Jerry than Bobby Weir. And thereβs a school of thought that in his lifetime Bobby played to more people than any musician ever. He was a non-stop musical machine for 60+ years! Β I played the following short playlist last night in honor of Bobby and I highly recommend it. Short, powerful, and covers I would argue Weirβs 3 greatest eras. Please play it as loud as possibleβ¦ Jack Straw from Cal Expo 6-10-90 - use Sean Weberβs spaced omnis Let It Grow from William & Mary 4-15-78 - use the official release. Me & Bobby McGee from Winterland 11-11-73 - again, use the official release Jerry steals the show at the end of the first two selections, so saveΒ #3Β for last; pure and perfect Bobby. When he got to the line, βIβd trade all my tomorrows, for one single yesterdayβ I got more than a little chocked up. Β RIP, Bobby Weir. You were a treasure.Β Quote
Forum MVP Greg from Chestertown Posted January 11 Forum MVP Report Posted January 11 12/26/69 takes the show for me. Bobby stumps Jerry with not knowing the masters bouquet. 3/31/87, Desolation row. I want to find that dark star/bobbymcGee/dark star, so glad Eaton  gave us Cassidy nite before Thanksgiving, any one of them from early eighties, any Jack Straw, this list will never end⦠1 Quote
Moderator Tea Posted January 12 Author Moderator Report Posted January 12 Got to meet Bobby in Spring of 1993. Richfield, OH, 3/13/93 to be exact (I only know the exact date because of the Archive). Β Night #1 was cancelled due to a snowstorm - wish they woulda told us before we made the treacherous drive to the venue. Β Oh well. We were excited because Jerry was back after a health break. He looked a bit like Kris Kristopherson - thinner, animated, vibrant (for Jerry). Was a bit gutted that we missed the Night 1 opportunity. To soften the blow, it was party-time at local hotels and motels, and let me tell you: the party started early at many places. Β We checked into our hotel and my travel companions wanted to sleep so I went down to the bar. When I got down there, it was decidedly empty-ish. Β Weird. Β I saddled up to the bar and thereβs Bobby, nursing a miller lite, looking like heβd rather be anywhere than there. No shit. Heβs hunched over the bar, peeling the label off his bottle. I sat down a couple seats over and the bartender asked what I wanted, and did I have my ID. I paused for a sec, leaned over and asked Bobby, βCan I get you a beer?β Β He paused, looked at me, and said, βNaw. gotta run - cheers.β Β OK - So maybe I didnβt Meet / MEET him Β Hittin me hard 2Nite - heβs been in the orbit of my life for over 40 years. Other than family and childhood friends, nobody has been with me for longer. What a trip. Quote
stlblues Posted January 12 Report Posted January 12 Sammy Hagar tribute to Bobby: Bob and I were born just two days apart. A couple decades ago we made a deal we were going to live to be 100, then get together and decide if we were gonna take it any further. One of the last things I said to Bob was βHey, I thought we had a deal.β His lack of response made me realize I was on my own on this one because Bob was already way past 100. He was 100 when I met him. Always the elder, the wise old soul. He had a pocket full of sayings that he used to simplify a conversation. My love, heart and prayers, go out to the family and friends for the loss of this wonderful soul. godspeed - Robert L Weir. Β My Bob Weir story: I met Bobby at Johnnie Johnson's wake in April 2005. I greeted Bobby just after he exited the car he was in. I shook his hand and thanked him for flying to St. Louis to attend Johnnie's wake and funeral. Johnnie Johnson's wake was an 8-hour jam session inside the funeral home in North St. Louis. Bob Weir with his band RatDog covered Johnnie's favorite song at the wake Little Red Rooster. I had never been to a wake like that before or since. Forum MVP Ammagamalin Crew Posted January 12 Forum MVP Report Posted January 12 https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/dead-and-company-vs-grateful-dead-personal-essay-1235497545/ Β My friend, who I met in the Oakland airport after the Mardi gras run in March of 1987 and traded tons of audio and video tapes throughout the years, wrote this. He's been a manager for Bobby since 2015. I thought it was beautifully and comprehesively written. Well done and succinctly in words that cover the fortunate life we get to live where music meets friends and friends get together regularly to celebrate life's joys and sorrows. Nice photo of him and Bobby β‘πΆππ±π· I met Bobby around 4:30 in the morning at the Kingfish shows up in Vail. It was after the first night of two and by the second night he had no voice due to some bad partying he was doing, got to dance with his girlfriend as he glared at us from the stage. Matt Kelly had invited my girlfriend, while we were in their hotel bar, up to the rooms. We all talked some; however, when they saw me get on the elevator with my woman, they said they were tired and gonna crash. I wasn't about to go back to the campground alone. August 86 when we were all somberly getting by without Jerry. Kimock was the lead guitarist.Β Quote

Forum MVP PoetryGirl Posted January 14 Forum MVP Report Posted January 14 So they say it was 11,111 days since Jerryβs passing that Bobby passed. The angel number. β€οΈβπ©Ήβ¨ Β also, no coda to Sugar Mag at his last show. I have read of a proposal to all to sing Sunshine Daydream on the year anniversary of this last show, Aug3rd. Isnβt that sweet? To take a page from Bill Grahamβs passing where the band waited a week to finish Sugar Mag in honor of him. iβm sure most of you are familiar with that one week pause where Sug Mag was played the day Graham passed and Sunshine Daydream performed the day of his memorial.Β Β Bobby Weir. What a mystical intrepid cowboy spirit. I saw him front row center with Wolf Bros before Covid broke in 2020. I tell you I listened to his rendition of β Tomorrow Never Knowsβ on repeat during that crazy time. It gave my soul solace. Just one of the ways he buoyed my life.Β Β Fly high Ace! Forum MVP John A Posted January 16 Forum MVP Report Posted January 16 A buddy of mine wrote this. I find it intense and amazingly well said. Β Wish I'd written it.Β π Β Quote Β Have so many thoughts and feelings around losing Bobby Weir. Kind of the end of an important chapter in my life. He is being welcomed on the other side by Jerry, Phil, Pigpen, Keith, and Brent. What a jam taking place. Thought Iβd share a few thoughts.. My journey started in 1976. My appreciation for the Grateful Dead goes far beyond liking a band. Their music feels more like a companionβsomething that has walked alongside me through different seasons of my life. What draws me in is the freedom in it: the way no song is ever finished, the way each performance is a living thing, shaped by the moment, the place, and the people listening. The Dead taught me how to listen differently. To hear space as much as sound. To value imperfection, risk, and surprise. Their songs carry storiesβof wanderers, outlaws, love, loss, and hopeβthat feel timeless and deeply human. Whether itβs the joy of a long jam finding its way home or the quiet wisdom tucked into a lyric, their music invites patience and presence. More than anything, the Grateful Dead represent connection: between musicians, between friends, deadheads, and between strangers who suddenly feel like family. Their music reminds me that the journey matters as much as the destinationβand that thereβs beauty in letting things unfold exactly as theyβre meant to. So we move forward with many great memories, stories and epic set lists. Love all of you who were a part of this journey with me. Itβs a sad day but also a joyous day of reflection. βFare thee well now / Let your life proceed by its own design / Nothing to tell now / Let the words be yours, I'm done with mine". Β Β Quote

Forum MVP Masons Child Posted January 16 Forum MVP Report Posted January 16 I sure did love reading that John. Iβm not sure I could even scratch the surface of that myself. So many thoughts and words and soul wrenching feelings that my words just seem to fail to convey. They started bubbling when Phil died but losing Bobby just seems to be hitting and triggering so much more and I canβt even explain that. I liked Phil and friends more than Ratdog before it was all Dso for me. I saw Phil more post Dso becoming everything for me. Maybe my opinion doesnβt really matter I never saw Jerry in the grand scope of things Iβm a neophyte. Can only say since 2007 I in anyway qualified as a head. Β But Iβm loss for words. I feel like something not just in my soul but in the greater humanity in the essence of love personified has died. Itβs not over. Jerryβs vision hunter vision the true essence of the Grateful Dead their music music itself and the vibrations of the Earth will go on. Itβs a forever journey. It will not end or die. But weβve lost a major component of it. An essential part of its origin. This loss can not be truly conveyed. Bob weir was a true troubadour of the music of the universe and within a small part of that is lost forever. It can not be regained. I can not express or explain it. A part of me is gone that will never come back. My expression of joy will never be the same.Β Quote
