For sure it was at the Ledges. It might have been the first day and DSO was playing as “Terrapin Nation “  maybe the time the set list was all songs just picked out by the various members of the band and not Dead songs.     I think Chuck can remember more of the details.

    peace and Love,

    Doc

2010 Gratefulfest at the Ledges. Terrapin Nation does a Thur nite set. I think this was the one where you and I met Doc. I wanna say we met Flairblair at that one too.

    First post

I haven't seen DSO many times.  The first was in 1999, then we had kids and going out was few and far between.

I took 2 of my kids to see them in the fall of 2019 and had a 5 show run planned for spring of 2020 until the walls caved in.

1.5 years later, got to go with my son to this show, so it is my favorite.  It was hot and the venue was cool.  My son is in a band and taught himself slipknot earlier in the summer (his hand cramped) so it was especially good for him.

    8/28/21 - Salvage Station

    Asheville NC

    04/29/77
The Palladium - New York City, NY

    Set 1:
    Help On The Way
    Slipknot!
    Franklin's Tower
    New Minglewood Blues
    Tennessee Jed
    Cassidy
    They Love Each Other
    Big River
    Loser
    The Music Never Stopped

    Set 2:
    Samson And Delilah
    Sugaree
    El Paso
    Brown-Eyed Women
    Estimated Prophet
    Scarlet Begonias
Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad
    Drums
    The Wheel
    Wharf Rat
    Around And Around

    Encore:
    Uncle John's Band

thats awesome direwolf919, and it was my 2nd birthday show of my career. (First being 8-28-88, Tacoma). We had a great group of forum members in Asheville for those shows. Salvage Station will hopefully replace the orange peel as DSO’s spot in this town, it’s a killer venue.

Year 3 was perfect after year 1 and 2. 75 highs. 55 lows. It was weird because there was no late night party years 1 and 2. Year 3 it was a fun party all night. Year 1 was rain every night. Year 2 was crickets as everyone got in their sleeping bags to stay warm. I forget which year but some dude had a drum kit for a drum circle and he was really bad. Couldn’t keep a rhythm but overpowered everything. Jubilee is just like the world at large. There are plenty of idiots. That reminds me of the vip thievery year where dude was breaking into occupied tents stealing car keys then throwing them into the woods after he robbed their cars.

M&M thieves runnin amuck also. We were victims.

I enjoyed hey little one for what it is, but it doesn’t have legs or lyrical depth or much of a groove.

hey, you can just shove that ignorant comment right up your ass buddy. I’ve seen you tear up to that song before!!

Ohhh, you’re just trying to push my buttons,… that’s what it is, cause no way you say something that stupid otherwise.

it wasn't a very good song, lol, hence not making it out of 65/66. None of those early original numbers did. I think Cream Puff War is fun and I'd love to see Jeff and DSO shred it.

hey little one should have made it but that song could only be delivered by Jerry in his 20s, so the shelf life was prob a consideration in its sadly short life. No doubt the best of the early stuff.

  6. I loved how Brett Favre said “he narrated my career”. So true, Madden had some mad love for Favre! Madden and Michaels were a hard team to beat in the booth. I think when they broke up is when they tried a 4 man Mon nite booth with Dennis Miller. Epic fail, lol!

So, I’m guessing not a first ever but a rare one with she belongs to me. Same thing with Layla. Rare but done before? That’s showstopper stuff for me. DSO strikes again !

They did the Layla coda in park city.

Joel, are you the Joel who saw me and Scotty play a couple times with the Pranksters in 2019?

If it is the same guy, he’s still at it. He was kind enough to drive me, sunny and rude to see Scotty and the pranksters Friday nite.

  9. This one rung my bell. From the stranger opening to the Jack a roe to a throw down with my boy BillK on blow away and Althea, Skip rippin the broken arrow, Esau and might as well blew out set 1.

what can one say about a set 2 that opens with chinacat>Aiko>FGJ>Rider, and it blew up from there. Props to Kenny on the Bring it on Home!, to the Layla, Fantasy, to the Low Spark, to the Piece of my heart, which Lisa stole with the encore!! I don’t know what y’all have heard but this band is fucking killin it!!! 😅 Love, love, love what they do and how they do it!!

can’t leave out a mention of Scotty (SML) for dishing out 2 killer after show gigs at the Cabin in Park City. Dude has chops and made a packed bar smile and dance!!

more lifetime memories made, love ALL the people in them and the joy they give me! Thanks so much.

  11. That was the stuff birthday show dreams are made of. Thanks to a great group of folks, including DSO and crew that made it a weekend to remember.

ps: my last birthday show was in 1988 and they played an 88 show (duh) and my second birthday show was in 2021 and they played a 77 show. Maybe my next one will be 2030 and I’ll get a 69!!

I have a hotel down the road from the festival. The name is michael dees motel. Due to this miserable covid my job is keeping me on call, so I can’t come up for the weekend.  The hotel is for two nights dso plays. (Friday and Saturday) and was $350. I booked it through booking.com and there’s no cancellation refund. If anyone needs a place to stay I will take 300 or anything you feel is reasonable. Anyone can message me for details

Hate to hear that brother. Big bummer. Maybe things will ease by the end of Aug!

Hope someone will take this room off of Vic’s hands. Guarantee it will come with good vibes cause I don’t know anybody who needed shows more than Vic.

Yeah - an admittedly dangerous game.  I was merely trying to remind Gr8fulpair that the HTH from 4/29/71 is the little brother of the one from 8/6/71.  Don't agree?  I've already sought the wisdom and counsel of Ron Burgundy:

    tenor.gif?itemid=12449331

Dude, the body of work that surrounds that HTH is unmatched by any show, combined with the absolutely surreal guitar work by Jerry and soul pillaging vocals from Pig. You can just keep your anti 4/29 rhetoric to yourself and then put it in your pipe and smoke it (cause eventually everything gets smoked). Most importantly brother, love you man!! ❤️❤️😂✌️

  14. Hell yeah, finally some hometown shows since moving to this area last year! And a birthday show to boot!! My last birthday show was 8-28-88, Eugene Oregon autzen stad, Grateful Dead, Robert cray band, jimmy cliff. Show was from 3pm to midnight, lol. I slept half the afternoon, haha. We were on no sleep from the Tacoma show 2 days earlier.

ps: I’d like to request a recreation of 4-29-71 for Sat night…. Shocker huh?!?!?’

  15. I would say the raving reviews are getting boring, but this band just brings it every show. If you can catch DSO for even one show, unless you’re a d-bag, the experience is going to be memorable.

Louisville sets looked sweet. Wonder if the last show cut short for weather was the first jubilee in 2012? Looks like the band thoroughly made up for the short set Fri on Sat night. Giddy up!

Thanks for creating this thread, RD.

    I’m very interested in giving.

I have a few questions for anyone who knows the answers, please.

If we give money at the link provided in the OP, does 100% of it go to Ron?

Also, other than very valuable time and expertise, what is the cost of running this site?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

    DD

Hey DD, we’ve never met in person but I’ve really enjoyed your participation on this forum. I remember your early times of moving from east to west. I did it also and lived vicariously thru some of your posts. I can’t wait to dance with you at a show.   I think what sunny (going back…) was conveying is that it’s really unimportant what the cost is to run this forum. I can tell you that yes, 100% of your donation goes to TR, I’m almost sure he’s always run at a deficit, so let’s let Ron put in the remaining  balance (or pocket a rare surplus) with the good feeling that comes with building a community. It’s like church, put in what you feel it’s worth and enjoy the karma. Love ya bro and hope this comes across with the the good vibes it was intended to!✌️✌️✌️✌️

July 7, 1987 was Roanoke, Virginia.

Interesting list, West LA set 2 opener.  Apparently a very small venue.

    https://gratefuldeadoftheday.com/07-07-1987

This was the first of 2 nights at the Roanoke civic center. My transmission took a shit on the side of the highway on the way to these shows. We hitched on to the shows and left the car. Glad we did. Both of these shows smoked! The crazy fingers from night 2 lingers in my mind as the best I saw. Went back to the gas station I left the car at a week or so later hoping to get about $500 for the car. After some hard core negotiations I accepted the gas station owners offer of $50. 😂😂😂😂

    Scenic venue, Great weather.

A nice bow for the CO shows.

I would say any hurt feelings

between Jk and the band have

    mended.  All musician appeared

    to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.

    BTW,  Kyle Hollingsworth band did

a Misty Mountain Hop that killed.

    Praise DSO.

Hey Bill, I lived on that big round domed mountain (Buffalo mnt) directly across the lake from the venue in Sliverthorne for a few years in the 80s and can confirm that amphitheater is about as epic a setting as you can find. Wish I had been there. Thanks for the report. So love all these killer musicians playing together again and having fun!!
