I heard a bunch of peeps who missed a bunch of jubilees for these high schoolers in weird states who graduate this weekend will be here this year. I may be in a bottom 10 educated state but we are smart enough to not graduate people on a 3 day weekend. I’d say we have better education based on the fact we don’t ruin holiday weekends with something as dumb as a ceremony for graduating high school. Like what else would you do at 17 besides showing up for school. We didn’t have middle school graduation but now they have that nonsense too.

    Well....not so fast.

I live in KY, right outside Lexington. Last year the schools delayed announcing when graduation would be, so I purchased tickets to Dark Star Jubilation. A few weeks prior to the event, the schools decided graduation would be on the same weekend. I had the same thought: who in their right mind would schedule a graduation on a three day weekend?

Well, they did. and my wonderful son was graduating. So I did what any loving father would do. I did both! Woke up around 3 am on the first night, drove like a bat out of hell, showered & changed in truck stop, and arrived early, clean, and suited up in Lexington where the ceremony was. Afterwards, celebrated with lunch and a celebration at home, and much joy was to be had.

Then I immediately jumped back in my car and made the 4 hour trek in record time and pulled back into Legend Valley, back to my tent, grabbed a couple of beers, and walked into the bowl as DSO took the stage again.

It was a whirlwind, but I did successfully manage to attend a much needed festival after covid and also celebrate my Son's awesome achievement. Win win. But yes, even in KY, graduations are planned for Memorial Day Weekend.

Unannounced. Think this was a special treat for hometown of lexington because theyre booked in louisville through April. I missed the bat signal. Of course its the best show that will happen for years since it was raining and cold and very few lucky ducks got soaked in psychedelia.

It was a show that happened really quick. It was basically conceived and announced in 24 hour period

How did they play the Steely Dan tunes? Representative of the Dan or the Dead? Or C, none of the above?

Um, like the Steely Dan with dead overtones

This little show at the Fishtank in Lexington was one of the better shows I’ve seen in a year. Lee and Brandon traded rhythm and lead guitar on every song outdoing one another and raising the energy level higher and higher, while Rob Barnes and Dino kept the groove jumping with their bass and drums locked in. The Viola Lee Blues and Dont Let Go were serious highlights and had amazing jams in them.

walked in thinking I’d have a couple drinks and a decent time, but the music was stunning.

  5. Saw Dinosaur Jr again last night- my previous show was 2009. Great show.

First time visit to Brooklyn Bowl (Nashville edition). I was always skeptical about bowling and shows, but it totally worked. I thought it was a fantastic venue. Most venues feel like a place that is designed with minimal thought to fans except to take their money, and at least at this one, you were deceived into thinking that someone designed it so music fans could enjoy themselves.

  6. None of my business, but: lots of groups toured this summer & fall with a pretty normal touring schedule. Any reason why DSO did a lighter schedule with mainly weekends? Need some extra time off?

Looking forward to the next DSO show,

  7. I did full time tour from 1998 to fall 2001. Further Festival/The Other Ones, Ratdog, (and some Mickey Hart), and Phil Lesh with Kimock and then the Quintet. It was an amazing time. Those tours were a blast and Bob & Phil (even Mickey) grew as solo artists So much so that when I saw DSO in 1999 or 2000 I didn’t appreciate it as much as I would later.

also, I had Pfizer 2x and it didn’t affect me except sore arm.

My 2nd Dso show was an accoustic show in Bloomington in 2012. Everyone but me was seated. I was on the rail. The seats were 20 feet from the stage so the pit was just mine. He told everyone to get out of their seats and come up front which they did. Was a very intimate show. The band talked to each other and made jokes all show as it was all accoustic. They even joked with the crowd. I was so new to the Dso scene I didn’t appreciate the intimacy and the banter at the time. Haven’t seen them talk with the crowd or each other like that in the 150 shows since.

They’ve definitely felt much more chatty on stage and robs definitely been higher energy this tour. I’ve appreciated both. See you all down the road!

  9. Night number one I was having trouble catching my groove. Night number 2 was the complete opposite- stellar performance and the crowd energy was much higher. I was sitting next to the soundboard and had a wonderful evening and the notes were everything I needed. Love Eatons new Gibson…sounded fantastic

  10. I had a great weekend and Saturday night show was great. For the Saturday show,  I arrived back from graduation ceremonies in KY 10 minutes before DSO came on- perfect timing.

I also pulled off another DSO event doing what I do best: hiding anonymously among a crowd avoiding anyone I might possibly ever know dancing to my hearts content.

This was a much needed pick me up for a really weird dry spell and year.
