We talked about this tour, and I predicted what you saw about how it was going to just keep getting better and better as he worked with the great artists in DSO... ...I'm really glad for Stu that the DSO fanbase was so warm and welcoming - big shoes to fill, and humility helped the fit feel right. Stu's getting the recognition he has long deserved, IMO. Let it grow... "Thanks for the validating response from someone who works with & knows Stu...I was only going off of four night's watching him on stage and a brief encounter between sets (since then, after the last show when he came down to the floor and talked to everyone and took pics with us, very cool to do), so it's good to hear that what I percieved was accurate...what we have described here eminated throughout...the great thing about that attribute is that humility is not something you profess or strive for...it is, IMHO and experience the result of quiet, respectful and consistent behavior (character)...you can have all the loud mouths out there in the Sports & Entertainment world thumping their chests saying "look at me" & I'll take the Stu's of the world who work hard and come out there, tear it up and deliver...letting us say how great that was...only to respond "that he just wants to fit in with these guys"...Wharf Rats have a saying about humility, to "be a worker among workers", "a friend amongst friends"...Stu's take is to be "a band member amongst the band"....that is what works, that is what inspires and draws the sentiments you read here just within this particular thread...i.e. NY Steve "I go where Stu goes"...he is not alone and when JGB swings back through this area June 10th, 11th & 12th, you'll see that man, in droves...He gained fans this past weekend & tour...big time, by playing & singing, yes...but there is something else there as well, nothing magical or mystical...just simple old fashioned modesty...it is a welcome trait that will fare thee well as this journey continues~ Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I agree it was a great weekend and I really don't want to post anything to take away from it. Friday's show was definitely in my top 10 DSO shows. So lets just enjoy the moment. I saw him in Dallas and Austin after only seeing him (and not being too impressed) with Donna a few years ago. The guy melts face. Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own. I hope are enthusiasm didn't hide this fact. I have seen Stu with Front Street (once) and the Schwag (3 times). Although both quality evenings of dancing and fun, I did not feel that either of those shows were on the same level as the DSO shows I have seen with Stu. However, when with the JGB or with Dark Star, Stu is capable of taking those in attendance to mystical places. Please know that I have seen JM both with the tricksters (a few times) and with DSO (7 times). I think he did an excellent job with DSO and I do believe we would be singing DSO praises whether it was Stu or Jeff playing lead on this previous tour. On the other hand, I'm singing praises for Stu (not just DSO: they are always praiseworthy for their tremendous effort to keep this music alive) and will make an effort to see Stu with or without DSO. Greg , I didn't feel this good and as excited to see DSO again after seeing Matteson with them , honestly , and I said this to you an couple other folks we both know ... Jeff is a great musician no doubt , but his vocals don't do it for me and those crazy overly extended jams become boring to me after awhile ... This, to me, is the essence of the Grateful Dead. THIS is the magic to me, not the vocals. Vocals are only something I care about after the fact, listening to a recording. If you haven't already done so download one of the Europe 72 shows with mattson---very very good. The way I see it though it makes no difference who they pick, because each musicians has his own unique qualities to bring to the table. Mattson brings consistency, soaring deep jams(the best dark stars since the early 70s imho), and great chemistry with eaton and barraco. Stu brings vocal talents unlike any since jerry(once again imho) and certainly some lead guitar playing ability. There seems to be a pretty big bias towards stu on these boards, I think mostly because of his singing....I'm happy either way and sure that the band will make the decision that makes the most sense.
