  1. California Kind

I had the pleasure of seeing The California Kind the other night in southern Oregon at the always interesting Applegate Lodge. The band features DSO's own Rob Barraco on keyboard along with John Molo on drums, Pete Sears on bass, Barry Sless on guitar and pedal steel, and young Katie Skene on guitar and vocals. The setlist was a mixture of Katie's originals and some covers. Space Captain Power To the People Willin’ Rebel Craving Ramble On Rose Lost Ones John Barleycorn Of Thee I Sing Sea of Joy > Showdown in Big Sky Gone High Five Low Spark Don’t Let Me Down E: May This Be Love I had a thoroughly good time and was really impressed by the music. Many of the songs were unknown to me but felt familiar, and I found myself easily dancing. The jams throughout the night were very coherent, smoothly flowing through different tempos, volumes, and feelings. The lineup of this band is really something, an all star cast if I don't say so myself. John Molo, to me, is one of the greatest jam band drummers ever. Always on beat, always feeling the changes and staying perched one step ahead. Barry and Pete I know from the David Nelson Band, their dynamic chemistry merging easily into this band. You all know, of course, of Rob Barraco, Ivory tickler. One of the highlights for me was during the second set opener (I think), though, when Katie took her first extended solo of the show. Her playing was smooth and thoughtful, confident but unassuming. The band was really having a good time during this- you could see it- and she rode the waves of their ecstacy beautifully. In general, I felt that the whole band was having a tremendously good time. I really was happy to experience this music, and especially happy to see Rob play something new and different. I strongly recommend checking out this band ASAP. I hope they continue to build what they have going! Btw, for those it concerns, I now like Low Spark...
  2. Albany Roll Call - 11/11/17

I can't think of a favorite all time show so I must not have one.... However, Ponte Vedra fla in I believe 2014 was a killer early still elective, enjoyed with good friends
  3. Albany Roll Call - 11/11/17

None of my friends here are any generified type. Except Darby's dad, he's definitely a Jersey shore type ;-) Why take pride in where you're from? Perhaps I'll change the word to 'normie' types. The normies who don't dance, stand around and talk. You're no normies, Greg. But sorry, meant no offense to my friends here.
  4. Albany Roll Call - 11/11/17

Palace theatre? You can dance there. Welmont is a flat floor (crowded with Jersey types) or two balconies. Depending how crowded it is it can be decent. Sound is average. Don't know the other one
  5. Dead & Co. - Fall Tour 2017

I'm not a huge fan of the Bobby Rockstar thing but his guitar playing is truly unique. Dare I say more unique than Jerry? No comparison necessary but just to say that what Bobby does is an integral part of what the grateful dead is. Put on a pitb from 72/73... Bobby is spinning all kinds of weirdness. It might not be what one's mind focuses on but it helps to frame the music together.
  6. Jeff Mattson and friends

I like this band. Similar to Zen tricksters but more mature sounding. Better bass player (sorry klyph). And Lisa! Some seriously good jams the other night. Wish I could listen again but I doubt there was a recording.
  7. Jeff Mattson and friends

Jeff and the guys/gal killed it last night! Not a huge crowd but a respectable one... And they dug it. Sleepwalking Heart of mine Body parts Deal @jet plane in a rocking chair @that's all @tecumseh valley Don't let go High horse The one Leave me out of this Say that I am Needle and thread Sweet inspiration Silver spoon @these lazy bones @the great atomic power @bird song Talk of the Town> Other one> A sailor's life Shine your light Arise 19th nervous breakdown Amazing. Lisa killed it. Shine your light and arise very unfortunately cut from the setlist due to lack of time. Bummer. Tempted to make the trek to Bridgeport tonight
  8. Anyone else coming out for Jeff and friends tonight in Ardmore?? I'll be there
  9. 09/26/17 Salina, KS

The Stars are aligning for me to catch Mason's bday! In the strangest of places...

Happy birthday Huck! Maybe see you in Boulder, undetermined as of yet...
  12. Owsley stuff

Where is the arrogance and pomposity? I stated my point of biochemical individuality and then I went on to say that I like vegetables. Does bear take into account the environmental damage it would cause for everyone to eat primarily meat (it's actually already happening and we know the impact is harmful). Did bear care about how the animals were raised? Because the only way I see it possible to provide that much meat is by unethical methods. Good luck setting aside enough land to graze cattle the proper way (cows eat grass, not corn/grain). I'm not here to tell anyone what to eat but we can at least discuss facts. Many facts are in dispute, being very problematic. We're all not so blissfully ignorant...
  13. Owsley stuff

I detest what he says about food. If that worked for him- great. But what he's missing is the biochemical individuality that we each posses. There is no one diet for everyone. I find his dialogue to be obnoxious and unfounded in any real scientific data. Additionally, I wouldn't want to see how our planet would be affected if we ate only meat. I appreciate Bear's contributions to all things grateful dead and LSD... But frankly I think he thought too highly of himself and his own opinions. I'm sticking with vegetables. You can't say 'carbs'- it's too broad a term. I agree that simple carbs- sugars, breads, pastas, etc- contribute to obesity and heart problems. Eating a vegetable stir fry does not. Again I repeat- everyone is unique and must find their own way. I won't tell you what's right for you (but your poop will) but I will shout back at people making grandiose claims. Good day!
  14. Bryan Adcock Appreciation Thread

They have lights at these shows?
  15. Rob Eaton

I disagree, Barry. Bobby took an occasional lead- blues numbers, friend of the devil, start of hard to handle jam ,start of the China Rider jam circa 72-74. Sometimes he would play the main riff of the song- China cat, it's a man's world. I've got a pretty good ear; I could tell you at all times who is making what sound. I don't imagine this is true for everyone. Most of the time of Jerry was playing rhythm it was because he was singing or the keyboard player was soloing. It's hard to call Bobby rhythm guitar. In the grateful dead everyone is soloing in a sense- it's a conversation.
