Do I have a right to expensive cancer treatments so that I can live an additional 6 months?

not meaning to nit pick this particular point...but...chemo & radiation have about a 35% success rate...would you take your car to a mechanic that only offers a 35% chance of fixing your brakes? statistically, those who do NOT get said "treatments" actually live longer than those who do....

as for preventative health care...it ought be taught to children in schools how eating is the #1 way to not only prevent but cure many many diseases...for instance, cancer, diabetes, heart issues are ALL completely preventable and cureable....why is it not broadcast? because this "health care" system is COMPLETELY designed to create return business, NOT to actually eliminate many of these "health epidemics"...

i would think education regarding the how to keep oneself healthy, as well as eliminating the crap that is force-fed societally {i know that ain't a word}, would go a long long way...folks are SO ingrained to be unhealthy that the u.s. society thinks it normal now to "get" these diseases that only in the last 50-60 years have become rampant & epidemic...

anyhow, perhaps preaching to the choir, tho ignorance is not bliss, but the road to disease {at least health-wise}...

sakada... yes!

around school I actually hear kids talk about it's okay to eat Wendy's but not McDonalds... they hear this stuff from what ever source and don't understand it's all bad and you shouldn't eat any of it ever! You're so right... that goes down to education too. We don't learn how coffee and cigarettes are drugs... or even advil for that matter.

or how the Standard American Diet {again, only in the last half a century} has come to be "normal", when in fact it is the exact opposite !!! these diseases are NOT normal when appropriately taking care of one's food choices and lifestyle...

ya know what? FUCK this "health care reform" !!! until it is done OUTSIDE the scope of the corporate medical and insurance companies, FUCK it...

Yes a very large cultural shift is in dire need, unfortunately most people are in denial of it. I agree 100% that I want no part of Health Care or health insurance or any of that crap we are being offered. That being said I have no health care and don't want any.

Isn't it great to have choices? Unfortunately, you will not have that option soon. We need you young and healthy guys paying premiums to offset us old and overweight people in this new plan. You must get health care wether you want it or not.

Let's say you are hiking and accidently disturb a slumbering rattlesnake. You only become aware of his presence after he proceeds to express his displeasure at being disturbed by biting you in a vigorous manner. These things do happen despite the best of vibes and intentions.

Your choices for treatment are an hour of hatha yoga and a nice cucumber and kale salad drizzled with a fresh sauteed pomegranate dressing, or anti-venom produced by a huge multi-national conglomerate that also makes napalm under license by Dow Chemical and donates massive amounts of money to Sarah Palin's PAC for the '12 presidential election. You have your mat, the salad and trimmings with you. The anti-venom is at the ranger station a 10 minute hike away.

Make my hypothetical interesting. Say it is your 6 year old daughter that is bitten, on her very first hike in a nice new wilderness area that was just opened as part of a land-swap organized by the Sierra Club and the local (very green) Indian tribe so they can have commercially viable land for their casino.

No doubt that obesity is a problem in this country. The food industry will change when the market demands it and this should start with education. School lunches should be healthy and low fat. Schools need to get the vending machines out and good food in. I think an overhaul of the whole food stamp business is also in order. Overall as far as health care costs go, I am not sure if unhealthy people cost more or less as they will surely die younger and be out of the system.

Kill snake>ranger station>casino (I must be lucky to have the anti-venom so close)

anyone know which gov't agency is the overseer of the school lunch program? answer will surprise you...

I am not sure, but i can tell you that my kids pack their lunch. Going back to the article you posted, I would say it is obvious that fast food is largely to blame. We have become a country that is not willing to wait for what is good and wholesome.

i also feel it the high fructose corn syrup in EVERYTHING...ever see the documentary "King Corn"? the "how to make" the HFCS is top secret!!! why? if it's in everything? apparently it is an incredibly toxic process...AND 99.9% of it is GMO corn...

and not just willing to wait, but ingrained to prefer the "bounding with flavor" crap...

to answer about the school lunch thing...............the dept. of defense !!!! grade D surplus food stuffs !!!! {at best}....tho there are some public schools {mendocino for one} that actually offer an organic salad bar as an option for the kids...too, on this point, there are some school districts that are refusing to sell pops to kids AND even some are growing their own gardens {the kids that is} while teaching the kids how to...yes, my boy packs his lunch {except when we lived in mendo and he would eat salad bar every day}...he is, on his own volition, vegetarian and extremely aware of ingredients...

My Mom used to be the gov't agency that was the overseer of my school lunch ... my daughter packs lunch for my 3 grandchildren every day and wont allow them to eat what the school serves ... and I know she does her best to purchase a more natural diet when food shopping and extremely limits simple sugars and red meat ... it all begins at home as most teachings should and the good foundation that is developed at home should reflect in the way we conduct our adult lives and how we cast our votes ... I don't really like to be involved in politics discussions as I do all my discussing in the voting booth , but thought I'd offer my 2 cents on this one ...

and if I were to be bitten by a snake that required life saving anti-venom , I'm taking the 10 mile hike , give me the serum regardless of what company developed it and what party they support or what chemicals used in war they develop and I'll have the salad for lunch and maybe a little yoga after lunch ... and live another day to vote and try and make a change in this mess we're facing ...

c'mon now...that is way off center on my point...

of course, if one needs anti-venom, or emergency care, a broken arm, etc etc, food wouldn't help {tho facilitate the healing process, yes}...

Sorry, buddy! It wasn't aimed at you or anyone else...it was really just apropos of nothing in general.

I meant to add that the DoD is now supervising shale-oil strip mining in the park, the Indians are selling head dresses made in Taiwan at the casino (which is run by solar power), the Ranger station is closed due to budget mandates, and off-road enthusiasts have run over the last rattler. The good news is that the kale and cukes were a bumper crop. smile.gif

We packed lunches too, and I once made the same brown paper bag last 3 weeks. The nickel half-pints of milk in the cafeteria did seem like a good deal. Buying the tokens was a bit of a hassle but well worth it.

Knowing my luck , I would happen past the last rattler in existence and he or she would probably be one pissed off mother for not getting laid in like forever and zap me with every bit of venom possessed by this snake ( come to think of it , I might have just suffered that and survived ) ... anyway , being that the ranger station is closed , I might as well just sit there and eat the salad and then commence to some meditation and yoga till the pearly gates open and call me in to enjoy the music of spheres for an eternal Jerry Garcia Concert , until the rest of the band makes it up there and then those of us there will get to enjoy some of those famous 77 & 89 shows and the rest , should be quite a Rock N' Roll party happenin' up there ...

alright , back to politics

Great answer.

As far as the school food issue is concerned, when I was in school it was total crap. Can;t think of one thing they used to serve that I found edible. Now that my kids are in school (public school I might add), they have a full on salad bar at both the elementary and middle schools and at the elementary school, they bring fresh fruit around to each classroom for an afternoon snack. Three different options every day. However, they continually send home notes asking us parents to send another ream of paper to school as they are constantly out and can't make copies of test, homework, etc.... Our public education system is getting more screwed up every day.

public education {or lack thereof}? i mean, high school even when i was in high school taught way more than it does today...tho my point is more along the lines of: my 7th grader would have to be in what? 1st, 2nd grade {maybe}? were we move to most any other country...

i know this topic has kinda headed towards public education, but certainly parallels may be drawn between the status of public education and health "care" in the U.S. vs. most any other country {developed countries, that is}....
