Forum MVP Supplicated Velvet Thunder Posted May 8, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 8, 2012 before I write a glowing, loving, honest review, I would like to just voice a selfish yet equally honest complaint: the tour shirts are the same with the diff dates on the back as the most recent tour on the west coast and for some that buy a shirt for every tour/show they do (I don't if I just do a show or two but if its a decent run or a tour, THAT'S a no brainer! even if i have NO MONEY I buy a shirt!)its a real bummer. sales for DSO must be hurt and the scene for that nice new smiling face, Winky, behind the table has be slightly more of a bummer and I am sure there is a really good reason why it happened but if you guys wanna print some tour dates on the back of some of the DSO tie dyes I know Mango and I will buy em and if you have a list started I bet there will be more that do..... or warn us next time so we'll get one on each coast not one each on one coast! Anyways, guess it doesn't really matter anyways, so to the music! I've wanted to see this band in this venue for quite a long time now and since the longest run I'd done of DSO on the east coast to date ended tour here but I couldn't go it was REALLY COOL to start this one here. What a great way to start a tour!!! Lonesome and a long way from home indeed (special for me and Mango but I know I can't call him out to everyone on all the sweet things he did to woo me so I'll leave it at thanks for starting with it!) and so fun that the technical difficulties just made the opening song jams extend into super tastiness right out of the pot.... Gave Nick the ghostbusters armband for a reason but he didn't wear it! hehe Part way thru Dire wolf I noticed that the crowd was really getting into it. Lots of spinning and turning and smiling all thru the room. Mango called it and the Passenger oh my goodness there were fireflies whizzing all around my face with those lights and zipping then growling sounds spilling from the stage. Box of Rain. Third time in a row. My step dad went on hospice this past week and probably won't make it thru the end of tour so I am kind of out here to pop in and out of there when the VA shows come around and to keep getting Box is just.... well.... special. really special. thank you. THIS Box was the best of the three for sure and it kept my heart light. I HAVE BEEN WAITING TO SEE POSITIVELY FOR YEARS. THANK YOU. I was really sad to miss it on the west coast. REALLY sad. this made up for it in EVERY way. more synchronicities but I won't bore you. enchanting and killer and every other word I just can't bring to the page because they are equally unsuitable to describe what happened in that room (at least my brain) during this selection. wow. breathtaking. then, of course, we all just dance our butts of for let it grow all sparkling and bright and the deal that we just didn't want to let go down. first set so solid and then the second just ripped it all apart. the whole band seemed to be in GREAT SPIRITS in every way and the mood spread with every note as not fade began our second set journey. the foolish heart was AMAZING. rob b's solo was just ridiculous in every way and I just can't get certain bits out of my head. nice nice nice. the drumming into the wheel was DEF drumming into the wheel and it always makes me feel like a clever lil deadhead when I can always pick out the wheel it is such a deeply special song for me and has been since I first started seeing DSO. loooooooong drumz which was very cool and the strawberry fields weirdness of space was so tasty.... strawberry space jam? mmmm! yum! OF COURSE into why don't we do it in the ROAD why DON'T we already!?!?! another love of mine when DSO does it cause they did it at my first show and this one blew that out of the water I'm pretty sure and oh yes that was GREAT! I heard people talking about the beauty of she belongs to me after the show while walking out so I can say without a doubt people were MOVED. I was indeed (btw I had the strap in on the unicorn since rob's solo in foolish heart and it had come off in first set for positively cause some moment I just have to absorb direct stylie) and it recentered me into the moment just in time for a very fun throwing stones that eaton really got into some of the screaming at the end of which always makes me giggle and the whole place just ate the nfa not fading away but just coming back to finish stealing our faces for the night. thanks for the goodnight irene it was just serenely circling fun and sent us all home just wanting to come back for more... which is the point, so well played indeed. THANK YOU!
Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted May 8, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 8, 2012 I generally don't write essays. I will leave that up for the brighter more artistic folk. I just want to say thank you. I didn't make it out west because, as my friends will tell you, I'm a bum. Thank you. You guys invigorated my spirit and reminded me what it feels like to experience pure unadulterated joy. Feels good to be back in neverland. Forum MVP chuckvegas Posted May 8, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 8, 2012 Wow! That is one king hell of a setlist! Some serious favs there - Lonesome, Pos 4th St (good to see that is in rotation, and I'm still riding the glow from Portland), Foolish (I am always chasing that and good to catch it in SF), and She Belongs is just heartbreakingly beautiful. Glad to see the tour opened so huge, and the Benefit show looks like it was the perfect prelude to what figures to be a tour for the ever-growing books. You all enjoy and see ya in a long week. Brian NJ
Sammy here, dictating for brian while at the comfort suites where they hate our tye dyed deadhead asses. won't even try to be as eloquent as previous posts, it was a wonderful opening of the tour! out of a show of highlights, if i had to pick one it would be the strawberry jam. i can't help wondering whether dark star's playing faster or i'm getting slower (brian not sammy). so good to see sara last night! higher ground is one of the most hospitable venues i can remember. can't wait to go back for more tonight! end dictation.
