  1. Yea, I was just listening to 11/15/71. I think it was 71. Dark Star into ElPaso so, anything goes. Unique, therefore, enjoyable. I remember being at RFK, 7/12/90. The band was getting lost in the musical abyss rabbit hole of Dark Star. I looked over at a ‘kid’ not too far away. He just rolled his eyes. I said, ‘ let them go. They’re doing what they want.’ they’re not the best at what they do. They’re the only ones who do what they do.
  2. I’m seeing it as reminiscent of the Grateful Dead’s 1980 acoustic shows or the 1989 formerly the Warlocks shows. Classic shows with a short prep time with Phil’s cancellation that will go down in history. I’m guessing for years people will be saying, ‘I was at those shows’. I have the distinct honor of buying a ticket and just not going. I feel like George Castanza when he takes a girl home and she invites him up for coffee. ‘No, I better not. It’ll keep me up’.
  3. The dirty grass players, along with the high and wides (Formerly Chester River Runoff) at the Garfield Theatre in Chestertown, Md. as part of the Downrigging festival. Tall ships and bluegrass all weekend. At times, there were two fiddles, two mandolins or two banjos on stage. Freestylin bluegrass jams, original stuff, a few ‘Dead’ tunes. Rosalee McFall, Goin’ down the road feelin’ bad, Deep Elem Blues. I ran into the guitar player for the high and wides at the grocery store today. I thanked him and commented that they were just winging it last night. He said, yea, a lot of those songs I had never played before.
  4. It hurts me too. I had a ticket for Halloween but the Gods interfered. Cosmic Charlie
  5. I love it. Clear proof that Dark Star Orchestra is moving the music forward. I’m sorry I missed that one. That set list has everything. So, how was it?
  6. I caught the last nite of this run in Philly. I sat on Jerry’s side seventh row. It’s different that close. You watch their hands.
  7. When you say friend of the devil, old school, does that mean the same pace as the studio version? Not half speed?
  8. A guy pulls in to a gas station, asks the mechanic, hey, stand Behind my car and tell me if my blinker is working.’ The mechanic stands behind the car and responds, yes, no, yes, no, yes, no.......
  9. 39 years ago today, I had it done to me by the Grateful Dead for the first time. About four days before, a girl friend of mine and I were walking across the parking lot at the Mann music center in Philly to meet up with about a dozen friends at a James Taylor concert. Two guys were arguing in the parking lot. ‘Thirty’. ‘No, thirty five’. I walked up to them and asked what they were arguing about. ‘ two tickets for the Grateful Dead Saturday night’. I immediately pulled out my wallet and said ‘I ‘ll give you thirty five.’ My first show is pretty much a blur, remembering only that it was like nothing else I had ever experienced. We sat, mesmerized, watching the people as much as the band. Smiling the whole time. Seven weeks later, I ‘m getting snuck into Radio City, catching an acoustic 15th anniversary show. Two shows later, I’m going to a show by myself, without a ticket. No problem. Thirty nine years later, I just caught a Dark Star Orchestra show down the beach while they were passing through. Life is good.
  10. I have two different hawks, about six different deer, a bard owl, a couple of turkeys, one with eight little ones a couple of weeks ago, all showing up in my backyard on a regular basis at different times of the day, night, week, to hunt or just graze. I had two fawns bedded down a couple of weeks ago. The best I can figure, they’re coming to get a closer listen to the Grateful Dead music that I am playing in the house. It’s the only thing that makes any sense.
  11. Anyone familiar with the Fillmore in Philly? They’ve played the Electric Factory forever. curious about the change, plus only one night.
  12. Let the words be yours, I ‘m done with mine?
  13. DSO has done quite a few Bertha/good lovin’ combos this year. I wonder if that’s on purpose.
  14. So, how was It takes a lot to laugh, it takes a train to cry? Showstopper? Or does that title go to unbroken chain?
  15. I was amazed last night at how, with that set list, the band just kept blowing me away with another great tune played to perfection. The highlight of the night kept getting replaced by the next song being the highlight of the night, culminating with Jeff nailing the vocals on Morning Dew. Eaton also was playing and singing his heart out. Skip laid out his fair share of bombs. Caught up with many familiar faces and found some new ones. Low point of the night was driving home on that dark, boring highway and having my GPS say, ‘ in ten miles, just keep driving straight’. I’m going back to bed. I must convalesce.
  16. I can’t recall a better Dark Star Orchestra show. Superb playing, vocals. They’re a band beyond description.
  17. Nice! I was going through the good ole’ emotional roller coaster yesterday after giving my ticket away. I had to keep reminding myself of the bigger picture and Stephanie from Ocean City getting her first Dark Star show. She got a great show. Mission in the rain must have been incredible in that venue. I bet you could hear a pin drop, every body swaying together.
  18. Yea, hobo song stood out on the list for me. I had to think for a minute in that one. I gave away my copy of old and in the way to an old timer who was into blue grass and started asking me about Jerry. Box a Rain is my all time favorite and musta been sweet delivered acoustic. A song like no other. Ripple placement reminds me of the ‘80 acoustic shows.
  19. How fortunate for the people who were there to experience Dark Star Orchestra delivering that set list acoustically. Wow.
  20. I’d love to hear a tape of that, especially second set. I’m not so sure how great the original Grateful Dead show was cuz it’s ‘91, but I bet DSO made it shine.
