JenL1125
That was it, and it was awesome! The band looked like they were having a lot of fun which is always a joy to see. They rocked and rolled and stomped the juice out of every song they played. The first set roared. The venue was too small, there wasn't much dancing room, but it was workable. One bonus was that everyone was in close proximity to the band. It was as super fun show! *Mango-I saw Melvin Seals and the jgb in ardmore last week. They played Russian Lullaby. I thought of you:)
TJed
A 71 show plus a 4 song filler! Wow.
Forum MVP August West Posted July 31, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 31, 2014 That was the one Aaron. I wrote a whole review then hit a wrong tab while editing, and deleted it. Not going to rewrite the whole fucking thing over again. Too burnt out. Filler: Catfish John, Let Me Sing Your Blues Away, Unbroken Chain, The Weight. (Rob Koritz on Drums) I think that was the 1st time DSO has ever performed Unbroken Chain with one drummer.
Mojo Hand
Two days later....and I am still on a post-show high. This band is something special. I have seen DSO 3 times. They have rocked my world each time....and now I must speak. I am 42 years old. My first Grateful Dead concert was in 1988 at the Spectrum. The Grateful Dead is the the only music that has ever penetrated me, and once the music got inside me it changed me forever. The Grateful Dead is one of the top 3 influences in who I am and everything I have become. So hear I stand, in fear of offending my own sensibilities, and boldly announce that I have never seen Grateful Dead music performed with as much energy, enthusiasm, vigor, and flat out balls as Dark Star Orchestra seems to display with regularity. I fully recognize that this statement is somewhat a function of my generation. If I had seen the Grateful Dead in 1977, I am quite sure I would feel differently. However, I was not so fortunate. I saw Grateful Dead concerts between 1988 and 1992 that were transcendental experiences.....start to finish! And then I saw numerous Grateful Dead performances between 1992 and 1995 that were inconsistent, flat, high and low, wonderful at times, frustrating at others, etc.... Regardless, it is now 20 years later and I feel so fortunate to be experiencing my favorite music performed as well.....and in many ways better....than I have ever seen it performed before. DSO makes me dance just as hard as ever, leaves me awestruck with the quality, precision, and detail of their playing, and transports me to those special places of days long gone. Even more surprising.....all that without the psychedelics that were such a special part of the Grateful Dead concerts of my youth! As stated, I have only seen DSO 3x....and each one has been a re-created gem. The first DSO show I saw was a re-creation of 9/27/80 at the Warfield......an acoustic set followed by two electric sets. I remember thinking how cool it was to see the music of Reckoning performed live.....and performed WELL. The second DSO show I saw was a re-creation of 6/7/77 Winterland. Enough said! Holy Shit....I was seeing 1977 Grateful Dead music! That's always been my favorite stuff.....'77! I was on Cloud Nine for a couple weeks after that one. And now Atlantic City...Revel. 12/1/71...Boston Music Hall. For me, just the words Boston Music Hall are steeped with so much meaning. A couple of my favorite all time tapes are Boston Music Hall, including one that was a very special gift from a special friend. So lucky to see music played from that time period.....and DSO just killed it. They are incredible. Beat it on Down The Line was smokin'. No question about it....I have never seen a better version than what DSO did two nights ago. Same said for Big Railroad Blues. I kept thinking that the playing was soaked in youth. It felt young and energetic. I am not sure how DSO channels that energy (they are not super young guys)...but cheers to them for doing it. Casey Jones was all Rob Eaton. I am a Bobby Freak.....and there are so many familiar guitar parts in that song that I had no idea were played by Bobby until seeing Rob Eaton play them the other night. It's nice that DSO has a sound man who appreciates rhythm guitar.....and therefore puts it at an audible level in the mix. Wish the same could be said of the Dead's sound people at times. Rob Eaton blew me away the entire night. He is so consistent and precise. Come a Time was just beautiful. One More Saturday Night ended the first set and it rocked. I apologize to the guy next to me who had to listen to the same rant that you are all getting here through the entire set break! Anyway....enough of all that. The songs all rocked and were all awesome. I am truly torn when I say things like DSO is playing the Dead better than the Dead. How could it be? A couple thoughts and I will be on my way. Through the massive library of live recordings which have been left behind, DSO is privy to the best versions the Dead ever played of everything. They have the ability to access whatever made the great versions "great" and go to that place whenever they want. The Dead were always creating.....and with that comes "stumbles and falls". In many ways (even when performing elective set lists) DSO is always re-creating. The process of re-creating music allows for perfection. Each time I have seen this band, there are a handful of songs they play that leave me saying "that was the best version of (blank) I ever saw". I think I am starting to understand a little bit of how and why. I wish I found DSO earlier......they truly are "a band beyond description". Best to all. Hope someone out there enjoys my post. Forum MVP PoetryGirl Posted August 1, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted August 1, 2014 Mojo don't feel too guilty. That is like saying Galileo did Copernicus a disservice. It is a wonderful thing to recognize talents being expressed to the fullest.

See you at Dewey Beach! Chuck Vegas said soon I'd be hopping on planes to see DSO after early posts. Literally sitting in one now waiting for it to depart. Time to re-budget your finances.
