Had to do a double-take when I read this (per Terrapin Crossroads FB page):

Phil Lesh and Friends is back this February for another memorable run of concerts in the Grate Room at Terrapin Crossroads! This incarnation of the band is sure to please with brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson of The North Mississippi Allstars, Jackie Greene fresh off tour with the Black Crowes and multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby! This 4-night run kicks off on Thursday, February 20th and wraps up Sunday, the 23rd. Tickets are $79.00, on-sale today at the Terrapin Crossroads box office beginning at 4:00PM and online Thursday, January 17th at https://store.terrapincrossroads.net/store/tickets. Ticket limit is 4 tickets per customer. This is a 16+ show. Doors open at 6:30PM and showtime is 7:30PM each night.

We will be auctioning off the 20 "front-row" standing spots against the stage barrier on eBay beginning at 4:00PM PST today at http://www.ebay.com/usr/txrfund. These 20 spots will be monitored by security, and the winners of the auction will receive wrist bands allowing them access to the security-monitored front-row. Bids will start at $89 and the winners will receive a poster signed by Phil Lesh!

* Winners of auction must have an ID matching the winners name. Guests of winners cannot accompany them in the secure area, one person per auction only.

We will also be auctioning off 10 front-row parking spaces. The auctions will start at $25 and the winners will receive a poster signed by Phil Lesh!

*Winners of parking spot must have a drivers license matching the name of the winner upon arrival.

Funds from these auctions will go to the M.U.S.I.C Fund.

M.U.S.I.C Fund: Mentor, Unite, Serve, Inspire, Create - The Terrapin Improvement Fund
All money raised through auctions and events benefiting the M.U.S.I.C. FUND will be used to improve the Terrapin experience and benefit our community.
Immediate priorities include:
Beautifying Beach Park
Subsidizing Our Youth Music Education Program
Continual improvements throughout the property
The M.U.S.I.C. Fund is not a nonprofit. Auctions are not tax deductible.

I'm not the guy who is against an artist making a living - and a good one at that.  But when you couple the Shapiro deal along with this, I personally think it's not a great look for Phil.  There is some suggestion about this configuration is a trial balloon for seeing if there is a market for additional pricing tiers based on proximity to the rail.  Wow.

I'm not really outraged per se since I would choose to vote with my wallet - Given I'm not on the left coast, its a moot point anyway.  I also get that TXR is a business - probably an expensive one at that.  This M.U.S.I.C fund has a youth education program which sounds nice and gives it an altruistic vibe but the rest of it gives me the exact opposite feeling.

Phil can do whatever he wants and there is enough demand to pull this off or he wouldn't do it.  It just makes me a little sad.

I'm guessing also an extremely profitable one.  That dining room/bar is a hotbed of activity most every night.

I wonder what the winning bids will be for the rail spots.  Don't people know how much better it sounds a few rows back?

Now now kids. It seems like your either celebrating music or whining about money. I'd rather celebrate music. DSO isn't cheap for a cover act. If its out of your price range, listen to some tapes and go elsewhere but don't make those that can and choose to afford alienated because they choose to support Phil. Paying for proximity to the stage has happened forever. Ever been to msg or any major arena.

True, but places like MSG do not auction off their best tickets, at least as far as I'm aware. It is always clear that certain events will have greater demand than supply. I'm sure this event will sell out and lots of money can be made off of tickets. I'm not a fan of them functioning as scalpers to their own event. At least that is how I see it. Nothing wrong with supporting Phil Lesh, but just because you can get a higher price for something doesn't mean it is right to do so. Sorry I think we just disagree on moral values. I like free markets, but only to an extent.

And BTW, saying you dont support venues and band trying recoup the actual value of their events; you are saying you support scalpers those who buy tickets for the sole purpose of making money off real fans. Pricing some real fans out. There is no middle road. You can't be against both, even if your would like to be.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Don't think of it as selling out, but rather buying in.

The above sentiments certainly articulate one perspective. I pretty much support laissez-faire capitalism and the free reign of the marketplace. He can set his prices and structure his ticket distribution as he damn well pleases. And those of us who do not care for it are equally free to express our opinions. Somehow I doubt these opinions will actually alienate, much less deter, those who are ready willing and able to shell out for their square footage front and center.

I bet the merlot is top notch but I will never know. And I'm good with that.

Those who buy those tickets are already alienated or maybe better put alienating themselves from many people and other deadheads. Just like they may look at the bottom 10 percent with scorn. The upper 1 percent receives scorn from everyone else. We have to bridge the gap and reunite us all in mind and body. We all have trials and tribulations.

Good God...What would Garcia think of this...

There's a bobble head of Phil atop the merchandise shelves by the front entrance.  When I noticed it, I said to the guy behind the counter, "hey, that's cool.  You should get one of the Jerry bobble heads from the Giants games and put it up there next to Phil."  He said something about how Jill would have to make that decision and he wasn't sure what she'd think about it.  I blurted something along the lines of, "where does Jill think she'd be right now if Phil hadn't met Jerry?"  Right away I was shocked I'd said that aloud, but it couldn't be more true...

I'm closer to a Socialist than a Capitalist....but i got nothing for you here...I just don't have the energy to be outraged. Phil has paid his dues, I got nothing but love for the guy. And I'm with Chuck Vegas, I love a nice Merlot too....but most likely will not be enjoying it at Terrapin Crossroads any time soon.  Above my current  pay grade. And that's ok...the dude has give me so many nice musical moments I can't throw stones.  Given his health situation and age, I;m sure he is tring to leave his family as flush as he possibly can.

Where would Jerry have gone without Phil? I want to say greatness was in store anyway but Jordan needed Pippen. Lebron needed Wade.  Just putting it out there for argument sake.  I think Phil is the greatest bass player ever and I kind of think he may have been destined for some greatness too.

who cares? isn't this kind of shit one of the big appeals of DSO?

with DSO you don't have to worry about who played with who and when, you can *almost* always stand right in front with the other one in 10,000's that comes for the SHOW (instead of the one in 10,000 that has the $), you don't have to concern yourself with which one of their ego's will take over the stage each night to the detriment of the music, you don't have to worry about what the new capitalist crap scheme from one of their wives is (they have some COOL wives!!!), you can still see Donna sing with "the boys", there are no armies of bobble heads guarding your way into the shows, you don't have to worry about them trying to break up your favorite band by making the lead guitar player their guitar monkey,

and best of all, they play PURE grateful dead, not this new age bullshit those "other ones" play now.

I am sad I never saw Jerry, but I am so freaking grateful I can feel complete and intense loyalty to the MUSIC and don't really give a damn who is playing it or where, as long as it is invoking Jerry's vibe.  I had a friend that worried about the "end of technology" cause he was scared he would lose his hard drive of Jerry, but I never could relate cause if we lose our computers we'll still have guitars and other instruments and we can still let there be songs to fill the air, so who cares if no one ever hears a note of what Jerry actually played ever again, the music never stopped, we are all still alive bearing the torch in our own ways, it's more important to play it than listen to it…..

anyways, kiss kiss and hope I don't offend anyone too deeply with my 2AM rant…. nothing i haven't said on here before, just kinda in summation.
