The last 3 nights were electives. My mind was way far blown to have any chance of remembering and no care to write it down. This experience can't be put in words or set lists. Those who didn't attend surely missed out. I liken it to the dead's Europe 72 run or maybe better put the Egypt trip in 78. This is the premier dark star family event. We all know each other and the band. They bring family members. We bring the love and we all party together.

What an incredible trip and 4 amazing nights of music!!! You are right, Mason, there are no words to describe the experience--you had to be there. Great music, vibe, view, venue, people, experience!!! Thank you DSO band and crew for giving us this uber real good time!

Sorry to have missed it for sure. Not a lack of desire - just can't have that major of an outlay (time + money) affect my relationship with my wife and kids. This is my cause (I signed up - all in) and the sacrifices are many and often times large. I was (re)born too late....

Love the obvious intimacy. I know it would be my version of 'perfect.' The dream is not dead - just delayed.

Setlists are meaningless - I get it. Sharing your experience is kindness personified.

I get the setlist thing. I couldn't tell you 30% of a setlist right after a show. I'm too in the moment and zoned in for 4 hours. I've had several shows that I have no recollection of a song being played during a show.

And tea?? Born too late??? U hit 200+ Jerry/dead shows. My 1st tour was summer 95. That's too late. I was so excited for fall tour 95 going to New York for 3 shows. I just got in to the dead then.......... :/. DSO now takes me back to that and I feel mentally 23 at shows. It's an amazing feeling that has become an addiction to feed with all the associated highs and lows. I'm just thankful for this band. I like the people better than the spread heads and that's where I'd be without DSO.

(Re)born too late .. At least for DSO. My life has been tied to this music since 1988. Amazing to see that this spans 26 years which is longer than the lives of some. They melt into a dream. My wife knows it's not a fad or mid-life crisis. We used to play for silver ...

Egypt 78! Really? I am sure Jamaica is a great venue for DSO but to compare this to the boys in Egypt is a little ridiculous but hey I guess I missed out cause I can't drop everything and go to Jamaica for a week.

The music surpasses that of Egypt. No Jamaica isn't nearly what I imagine Egypt to be historically or culturally. More referring to the private party for band and friends. The trip isn't about money its a celebration of this music unlike any other. And ya did miss out but we can't make them all. Sorry if you missed my point. If your choice is Egypt or Jamaica with no DSO, my money is on Egypt being more life altering. Unfortunately, I dont drop everything for a week unless GD music is involved.

I'm comparing apples to oranges and my better than comparison may have been unfair.  Generally, when I speak about the music, I am not at all talking about the experience.  I've listened to the music performed in Egypt.  It didn't blow me away for 78 Dead.  I thought the music played at Winterland following the Egypt trip was much stronger and probably riding on the high from Egypt.  I've read that Jerry and the boys did not think the music they played in Egypt was of their highest quality.  Jerry can be a tough critic on his own performances but I generally respect his opinion.  He also spoke of the adventure and mystery and spirituality felt on that trip.  It was life transforming.  I can only talk about their experiences and the experiences of others that have been shared with us.  Jiga, were you in Egypt? I would love to hear you share your story about that epic trip.  From what I understand, most of the attendees were friends and family of the band.  Very connected deadheads and I would love to get the inside scoop from somebody on this trip.  Please share.

I've chosen to see the parallels between the two or three ventures.  Europe 72, Egypt 78, and JITS II all were not great financial successes for the promoters.  Between the size of the traveling party and in the case of the Dead the equipment, these trips didn't generate much cash profits for the band or their promoters.  Trips, like these, have tremendous overhead and often the promoters struggle to recuperate the costs of the trip.  I've heard JITS II may have fared slightly better than originally anticipated.  Egypt and JITS are both short runs.  JITS was a spiritual experience for me. By all means, one can also list the differences.  JITS venue is picturesque; Egypt is other worldly.  I'm choosing to see some parallels and your choosing to see the differences.  We both know how it goes, "you ain't gonna learn, what ya don't want to know."  I'm sorry if me seeing parallels offends you.  I'm going to listen to the music from Egypt again to see if maybe my opinion is not fully developed on the music side.  Hopefully, before I die, I can experience the mystical side myself with my own trip to Egypt.

So let us agree to disagree.

I don't think there is any debate that, strictly from a musical perspective, Egypt was a let down and was well under the general quality of '78 GD.

That said, check out the strength of Garcia's vocal delivery in Stagger Lee.  You didn't need to be in Jamaica to know nothing like that happened.  :)

I'm going to listen to all three gigs and then dig up the official release.  I'm searching for gems.  I liked the Peggy-O despite some technical issues.  There is no question in my mind that the few moments of Jerry's greatness shining through could not singularly be matched by DSO ever, but overall, DSO offering of 10/7/77 in my opinion is a better overall show than any of the shows played by the dead in Egypt.  Now, Winterland following Egypt, no way.  You can shoot me for my opinion if you must.

With measured statements like that, you are safe from the firing squad!

"..when all we ever wanted was to learn and love and grow, once we grew into our shoes- we told them where to go, walked half way 'round the world, on the promise of a glow, stood upon the mountain top, walked barefoot in the snow- gave the best we had to give, how much we'll never know...never know"

DSO keeps the school's playground open and the swings swinging and allows the teachers to continue teaching

I bet you JITS was amazing. I'm with Tea on the family and responsibilities preclude me from attending tip. But who knows... maybe next year.

I love Steel Pulse as well. Any feedback on tiger shows? Perfect opener IMO.

Plus, who needs Egypt? They have third world problems. Jamaica/DSO has hippie problems. I'm well versed at negotiating hippie problems.

I was not impressed with Egypt 78 and agree that the following trip to Winterland was way better. Still the mystique of Egypt is one big aspect of those shows. They have their moments but I don't listen to them all that often. I know they had a lot of trouble keeping the piano in tune.

I would have to say that who ever was in Egypt at the time wasn' t thinking that this is a let down .When we are in the moment of the music it seems a lot of times that everything is perfect in the world ..it isn t until later, and I am sure people will disagree with me on this one but the 89 meadowlands dark star show I thought at the time was so incredible but I listen to that show now I just don t think its that good...There were a lot of shows like that for me post 85,I  never seen a bad show in the 70's.I also after 200 plus shows of dso have never seen a bad one.I think at times the energy is much higher then others but they are always consistently good ,which the last few years of the dead it was just so hit or miss for me.Jits sounds like such a great time.

I am a simple person, so a lot of this academia stuff goes right over my head:}!!!!

I can see the GD trip to Egypt as being very special to those who attended.   I am sure very few got to attend.   If people remember the politics and economy during that time, then they will remember how hard it was to  get gasoline to fill your car on certain days, inflation was rampant, and interest rates were sky rocketing.

To make it to Egypt, you would of had to be either connected or really well off!!  I imagine the people that went to Egypt no matter the quality of the music, was and were some of the most dedicated.

For MC to compare JITS to Jamaica is not a far swing.   Two different bands, two separate places, but perhaps some of the same feeling.

Same Same but different!!!!!    Actually I will take it a bit further, as I have beliefs about GD and DSO that transcends the typical post show discussions.

If anyone knows about (and this is a smart crowd)  Quantum Entanglement, and has the ability to apply it to GD/DSO than it is easy to understand relationships between venues, and how a person today at JITS, not even alive during Egypt, can still experience Egypt while at JITS!!!!!!!

The concept is more simple to me than the music, but I really try to keep things light, and stupid simple since I have a hard time verbalizing my thoughts======especially at shows!!!

I was going to keep some of these thoughts to myself, but if anyone has ever seen me dance, you will realize I keep to much bottled in anyways, and just let it out when I feel safe and comfortable.

No matter the venue, when the music plays, I feel safe and comfortable.   I don't know all the shows you guys know, and I really do not know GD as much as many of you.   But I love it just as much.......if not more!!!!!

I see DSO as my modern day GD.   I dance to DSO harder now than I think I used to dance to GD.   Like fine wine, the music seems to only get better----in my mind.

The discussion of how JITS is spiritual, and "family" orientated is absolutely the TRUTH!!!!

To compare Egypt and JITS is not apple and oranges for me.     Its pure "Quantum Entanglement", realized on a larger scale.

JITS is about the DSO Family.    I know I am just a visitor when it comes to this family, but for 4 days, and 3 nights I got to be a part of something special.  I met people in Jamaica that despite my shortfalls, were as kinder to me than most in my normal life!!!

I never consider myself a groupie, but how can one not be somewhat blown away by the intimacy of JITS.   No names included, but I had one band member come up to me and actually introduce his self to me and shaked my hand.   I was too "star struck" to utter anything of value back, but the experience is something I have replayed a million times in my head.    I had another chance, thanks to some very kind souls, to allow me to hang out and just listen to another band member and his wife sit and talk.  I just sat and listened like a silent statue----absorbing and listening trying to understand how this person can produce such soulful sounds, but yet be so normal!!!

I have a hard time separating DSO into separate components, as together they are MAGIC!!!!!   However, meeting, listening, and on occasion, talking with these guys and gal in a setting like Jamaica is about as good as it gets.

Yea.......the intimacy of JITS is something bigger than anything I have experienced!!!  This was my Revival, my resurrection of the beauty of music and all the spiritual meaning behind it!!!

A last thought, before I go take care of sick kids, and try to go make some money today!!!

There is not a GD recording that I would prefer over a live night of DSO!!!!!     We are all so very lucky that DSO was formed, and that they give us as much as they have to give!!!!

DSO is no longer just a band, but its a concept that will continue to last for decades if not centuries to come!!!!   I for one am so very thankful for DSO bringing it back, and even more thankful that generations to come will be able to move their feet and shake their souls to music that forces us to learn about ourselves, others, and the world around us!!!!!

Oddly enough, I usually get Post DSO Depression really bad.  Really bad!!    Not this time.    I am still smiling, after I finally got some sleep!!

NYE run, Jubilee, and other runs have left me with a sadness when its over.  I don't have that feeling about JITS.   Why, because it was that special, that I only have smiles!!!!!!

A BIG thanks to DSO, its crew, and all those that have kept it going.   I for one am eternally grateful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
