Yes! My only time at cal expo and we had to take shifts either being the mic stand with the AKG 460's horn hat or running the D5 levels and flips FOB. 3 shows meant six shifts to be filled.

'89 Cal Expo was the first shows I was involved in DAT taping... no flipping necessary! ☺️

Since we're on the subject here , there and everywhere:

https://archive.org/details/gd1987-08-18.145599.nak300.in-house.fm.composite.hessberg.miller.clugston.flac1648

Weird, I put in August 20, 1987 hoping for Park West and it brings up the pesky Compton Terrace, even when I went back and did a second search. I know Park West was taped by our people with AKG460 dbx D5, guess I'll have to dig up my tape and send it to someone that does digital transfers.

8/20/87 opened with Big Boss Man.

2nd set,: ChinaRyder, truckin>smokestack and Stella showed up (that's all I can remember)

10/9/89 defies comprehension.

It really, really does.  The Dark Star colored the vibe of the whole show but that Death Don't > Dear Mr. Fantasy may have been even more profound - with the Attics as a wonderful sendoff.

Boxing Day (iykyk)

12/26 eventually settled in as part of the NYE run in Oakland, but here in 1969 the boys are in Dallas.  Unique show that starts with just Jerry and Bobby, and they’re playing acoustic guitars.

Would like to highlight The Master’s Bouquet, a Hank Williams number, as well as the stage banter throughout. If you are reading this, you will like.

This is worth your time…

I love that show. Interesting stage banter before Masters Bouquet, Bobby knows the tune and Jerry doesn’t. That’s a rarity in itself. I just listened to 12/26/79. My favorite era for space, about when I started, so have always referred to space as “dinosaurs on the moon”

Fall/Winter ‘79 is the goods!  12/26 is the culmination - IMO.  Amongst the best post-1970 setlists

Fortunately I was able to catch my 3rd show because someone decided not to go at a Friday night house party in Laramie, Wyoming and I took my friend Tim up on the suddenly available Sat night Grateful Dead ticket for the Aladdin Theater in Las Vegas. This adventure was about the road trip. 780 miles each way and having to be back in class by Monday morning. My first two were about seeing the Grateful Dead and were only in Morrison, CO, 9/7 & 9/8/83 a mere 2 1/2 drive from UW. My fourth show was about both the road trip and the excitement of seeing the band again in Syracuse fall of '84. By then I was enrolled in college back in Cincinnati in the professional drama program CCM offered @ UC. As you listen to the end of this show picture Bobby sitting on the edge of the stage swinging his legs back and forth during SSDD🎉🎶🔥also a real drippy space only a week before the last Dark Star for five years. I didn't get my first HSF until it was revived by the Warlocks in '89, even then it took me until 1990 having not gone to 9/6/83😞. But now all is good with DSO keeping things in progress! This here is an outstanding DSDB. Give a whirl without looking at the setlists... there's an unusual surprise after d/s

(Edited 4/8/24)~ the comments under this archive recording tell about how closely the band was connected to the audience and illustrate the dedication of the audience to the scene and the band to the audience)

Where is the Chicago area summer show? They played in Aurora some years ago at Riveredge Park. A great place to see a show.

seceral years they did those 4th of July mini runs in the Midwest. This year it’s Colorado and lately it’s been Cali. Those mini runs of 6 or so shows were my favorite time of year. We did them all for 4-5 years until C-Day and B-Day.

That’s the gold standard Dew with a couple others nipping at their heels.  Also the gold standard Dancin in the streets (post 1970 anyway).

Somehow a million roses fell from above onto the stage area on this beautiful sunny afternoon show as they started into Bertha, being barefoot on those cozy, grass covered 7 inch high, 5 foot wide tiers that made sugar coated Frosty Flakes out of all of us who could stand the lift off on that Sat in the land of lullabyes

6/17/91 @ Giants Stadium

This was the weird Dark Star tease show with Eyes as the show opener.  The UJB outro was total madness and the star of the show - IMO.

RFK and Giants were really fun shows but their was real weird/dangerous stuff going on and these would be some of the last stadium stops I went to.  Just real bad vibes with sketchy cop encounters,  way sketchy event staff/security, and aggressive people looking for a fight.
