What was the first song you heard The Grateful Dead play (or for you younger folks, first Dead related tune, live)?

First song I heard live was Hell in a Bucket at 3/31/88 Meadowland, but the song that hooked me from that show was Let it Grow!! That number just blew my mind!! I did a quick 101 shows between that night and my final Grateful Dead show, which was 6/22/95 at the Knick in Albany.

Friday 9/12/88 Spectrum Jack Straw. Last show was Shoreline 6/3/95. In some ways it's starting to feel like a long time ago, and in other ways it feels like it was just yesterday. What a long strange trip indeed! And the road continues with DSO! :539:

15 years old - went to visit Aunt in NYC and my cousin asked, "wanna go to a concert?" First show for GD ever at MSG. January 7, 1979 - Madison Square Garden - JACK STRAW. I hoped they would play Truckin (the only song I knew). I was amazed how much I loved every song played. I adored the scene.

Before the show

Girl in in Penn Station pins a rose on Frank's white undershirt.

Girl: "Would you be able to give me a few dollars to eat?"

Frank (totally in love): "of course...here you go"

Girl: "May I have a few more dollars?"

Frank (falling further in love): "of course!"

Girl: "Just a little more, please"

Frank: "That's about all I have to spare"

Girl removes rose from Frank's shirt, says bye and walks away.

Frank shouts: "Will I see you inside at the concert?"

Girl spins, her dress twirls in the air, and she says: "Hari Krishna!"

Day 1, I was hooked.

Promised Land- Englishtown Sept 77' It was so frigin' hot there during that show, and water was so scarce, that alot of people were passing out. That raceway was one huge L test that day. That was my senior year in High School, I was going to go to a D2 school to play football after that season, but I said fuck it, and ended up on tour. I guess it was the pre-determined plan for me. Although my old man wasn't too happy at the time, to say the least. He wasn't around much at the time much anyway, as my parents were divorced and I lived with my Mom, who try as she might couldn't handle me. God Bless her soul. When I think about the worry and sleepless nights I caused her, it makes me sad. My all-time favorite Half Step, was at this show. Now it's 35 years later, and I'm taking that ride again, and lovin' every minute of it. LONG LIVE DSO!!

Very nice guys!!! Both of you have a first show that was a cooker!!

Great topic Herdy, although your FB posts about Midget Wrestling, and Asian porn aren't too shabby either.

You lost me there buddy... midget wrestling and asian porn?? While I love them both, I don't recall posting that on facebook... yet, I don't recall what I did 5 minutes ago, so it's entirely possible! :)

Hampton '85 - Alabama Getaway - but the 2nd set Wharfrat sealed the deal....

My brother introduced me to the Dead on this 2 night run. Countless shows and memories together later I can only muster thirty-three words...............Thanks bro, I love you and I appreciate you turning me on to something that, 27 years later, remains a central part of my life and I'm glad we still share that together.
